Calum lifted his hand slightly and furrowed his brow as he spoke, “You never need me to worry about anything else, so why do you stumble only when it comes to relationships?”
“Father, I’m fine the way I am.”
Standing at the door, Amelia felt a sharp tug at her heart.
Dylan really was an ideal man in every way. And yet, someone like him was still waiting for a person who was never coming back. Was this Heaven’s way of punishing him?
Her chest tightened slightly.
Just then, the door opened. He stepped out, and as he passed her, he only uttered, “Come on.”
She quickly followed behind.
As they left the estate, she noticed there was no car in sight. In addition to that, the main gate was at least a half–hour walk away.
With no other option, she placed both hands on the back of his wheelchair and pushed him forward. The two of them moved along at a slow, steady pace.
For such a wealthy family, how could there be no car waiting at the door?
Her eyes dropped to the strong lines of his back.
Since they had a long walk ahead, she felt the need to break the silence.
“Mr. Hale, I think Mr. Hale Senior made a good point. You can’t wait like this forever. Maybe having a woman by your side to take care of you wouldn’t be such a bad thing.”
“So, you
think I’m a cripple who needs someone to take care of me?”
“No! Not at all. I just don’t want you to be lonely.”
The moment she said it, she felt she had crossed a line. She rushed to add, “Of course, someone like you is probably used to that kind of solitude. Haha…”
Before she could finish her awkward laugh, she heard him murmur, “Never
ised to it.”
In that instant, Amelia felt as if her heart was clenched in a giant fist. It ached and felt tight.
She opened her mouth to offer comfort, but every word felt too shallow.
The only person who could soothe his loneliness was the one in his heart. But everyone knew that person
was gone.
And yet, he insisted on waiting. He would wait foolishly for someone who would never return.
Amelia gripped the wheelchair handles tightly and couldn’t hold back anymore. “Actually, there are plenty of remarkable socialites in Solandis. You could take your pick, Mr. Hale. There are so many successful marriages that started as business arrangements. Maybe over time, you’d grow to care for someone. Someone to take walks with, read books with… even travel with.”

She wanted to say more when he interrupted her. “Is the moon beautiful tonight?”
She froze, then quickly looked up. “Ah… It’s not bad.”
“Mm.”
Wait, what did he mean by that?

Amelia hesitated, unsure of what to say next. She held back her words until they reached the large iron gate, and the car parked just outside.
Then she said, almost as a reflex, “The moon is nice, but you’re definitely better looking. Being with you, it’s hard to notice anything else. It’s truly a waste that someone as handsome as you is not being admired.”
What she said was completely off the rails, but she just couldn’t stand the oppressive silence that seemed to weigh on him all the time.
Right after she spoke, he let out a soft chuckle.
Amelia breathed a sigh of relief; it felt worth it.
Dylan chuckled for several seconds. “So, were you admiring me just now?”
. Was he asking if she’d been appreciating his looks?
Well, at this point, there was no point in pretending otherwise.
“Of course! I couldn’t help sneaking a few glances. Mr. Hale, you’re honestly top–tier in the looks department.”
“Mm.”
Ah…
She suddenly didn’t know how to respond.
Because she’d never dared to think of him that way, even if she had admired his face, his presence, it was completely without desire.
Anything else would feel like it tainted him./
“Mr. Hale, I really think you’re a wonderful person.”
Polished, principled.
As she helped him into the car, she scrambled to think of more praises.
Maybe it’s human nature to admire beauty. Seeing a beautiful person smile just made her want to try harder.
Dylan curved his lips into a faint smile, but didn’t look at her. Instead, his gaze drifted to the window.
“Do you have a daily quota of compliments to give me or something?”
Amelia froze, her eyes widening in disbelief that he’d actually cracked a joke.

So Dylan Hale did have a sense of humor after all!
“No, I just felt like complimenting you.”

After she said that, she scratched her cheek awkwardly. Only then did she realize that the car was headed toward her place.
When it stopped, she stepped out and knocked gently on the window.
“Well, I’ll head in. Thanks for bringing me back.”
“Mm.”
She turned and walked toward her building. But she couldn’t resist glancing back. His car was still there.
Once she got to her floor, she ran into her neighbor, Savannah Reed.
Savannah was one of those striking, magnetic women with a powerful presence. She seemed to have just gotten home as well.
Even though they lived on the same floor, they didn’t really know each other.
This time, however, Savannah spoke first. “When I was coming back just now, I saw a suspicious car circling the area. It looked like it was parked right under your window.”
