Chapter 299
Henry stated fixedly at the name on the document, motionless for a long while. Just one photograph had shattered at the hopes in his mind.
Throughout their six years of marriage, Sophia had never shown him a smile as genuine as the one in that photographi,
He had always felt that when Sophia looked at him, she seemed to be looking through him at someone else.
When she was sick, she often murmured name in her delirium: “Sam.”
Even when she married Henry, Sophia had asked for nothing–no lavish wedding, no expensive ring. She had moved into the Harding estate with just a small suitca
Because she didn’t care.
She knew perfectly well that Henry Harding was not Sam Davis, so she never had any expectations of Henry.
It was precisely because she didn’t care that she could now be so resolute and decisive about the divorce.
Henry’s entire body radiated an incomparable
ess, like a statue sitting perfectly still.
He had been planning to call Sophia, to ask her to visit him.
He had even prepared a gift for her.
Now, suddenly, none of that seemed necessary anymore. He felt like a clown who didn’t understand his own identity, foolishly believing that Sophia loved him.
James noticed his boss’s unusual state and immediately approached Grace. “Miss Harding, the CEO is unwell right now. He’s still recovering–please stop agitating him. Whatever it is, could it wait until after he’s discharged from the hospital?”
Grace saw her brother’s hollow gaze fixed on the photograph and thought he hadn’t heard what she said. She refused to
leave.
“Henry, don’t let her fool you!” she insisted. “Sophia only wants our family’s money! After the divorce, she’ll get half of everything. She’s nothing but a greedy bitch!”
Though Grace didn’t understand the whole situation, she hated Sophia and couldn’t stand to see anything good happen to her. Since her brother was determined to care for this woman, she was equally determined to destroy Sophia’s perfect image in his eyes.
Henry could almost hear the sound of his heart breaking, piece by piece falling to the ground.
He slowly raised his bloodshot eyes to look at his sister who still refused to leave, and snarled: “Get out!”
James, seeing that his boss was truly angry and worried that mishandling the situation wou cause trouble, dragged Grace out of the hospital room.
At this moment, Henry had lost all of his usual composure and authority. His eyes held an unfathomable coldness.
The photograph in his hand had been crushed out of shape, along with the woman’s smile that had become blurry and

indistinct.
When James returned, Henry had already crumpled the photograph into a ball. His ley gaze lucked onto his scsistant-
“Investigate a man named Sam Davis. I want to know everything about him, especially any relationship between lives and Sophia. James didn’t dare delay and immediately turned to begin investigating the matter.
Henry had a feeling that there was much more to this Sam than met the eye.
Meanwhile, the entire Hernandez family–David, Scarlett, and Daniel–had been detained.
David was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Dissatisfied with his situation, he cried and caused a scene, demanding a better lawyer and complaining about his assigned public defender. The police, tired of his antics, placed him in solitary confinement. Aside from delivering three meals a day, no one spoke a word to him.
Scarlett and Daniel, as accomplices with less serious offenses and showing signs of remorse, were released after a month of detention. They paid more than thirty thousand dollars in fines and returned home penniless.
So when Catherine sent someone to inquire about Sophia’s situation, Scarlett didn’t hesitate to reveal her relationship with Sam. Scarlett knew little about the couple’s romantic entanglements, only that they were close, and that Sam had even worked to put Sophia through school.
Catherine followed this lead and discovered the true relationship between Sophia and Sam. Finding this information useful, she gave Scarlett a few thousand dollars as payment, which made Scarlett see a quick way to make money.
She then voluntarily provided Catherine with more information: Sophia had previously been pregnant with a child of unknown paternity. But this time, Catherine completely ignored her.
With David imprisoned, the family had lost its source of income. Scarlett herself had no means of earning a living. After careful consideration, she decided to approach Sophia again—after all, it was only natural for a mother to ask her daughter
for money.
Scarlett arrived at the hospital entrance but was stopped by security. “Ma’am, you cannot enter,” the guard told her firmly.
She looked confused. “I’m a patient. I’m here to see a doctor. Why can’t I go in?”
To prove her point, she deliberately coughed heavily twice.
“If you don’t let me in, I’ll make a scene. I’ll let everyone know what kind of hospital this is, refusing entry to patients.”
The security guard pointed to a facial recognition screen, “Our system has blacklisted you. You cannot enter.”
“If you don’t heed our warning, we’ll have to call the police,” the guard warned.
Henry, in a foul mood, had just left his room and was heading back to the Harding estate. As he came downstairs, he
witnessed this scene.
Henry had seen Scarlett before and immediately recognized her as Sophia’s mother.
Since she was Sophia’s mother, she must know about Sophia’s past.
For many things, having James investigate would be far less direct than simply asking her.

Henry watched as Scarlett was forced out of the hospital, walking aimlessly down the street. He instructed his driver to
invite her over.
The driver approached Scarlett and extended the invitation: “Excuse me, are you Scarlett?
Scarlett glanced at the well–dressed driver, appearing quite impatient: “What’s it to you whether I’m Scarlett or not? Don’t try to get friendly with me. I know exactly what you’re thinking!”
“You’re just using asking for directions as an excuse to hit on me! Get lost! I’m in a bad mood and don’t want to deal with
you!”
This person was clearly someone’s servant, bowing and scraping like a lap dog. He probably wasn’t worth much and certainly wouldn’t have money.
And this type of person wanted to hit on her?
The driver, seeing her rudeness, furrowed his brow slightly and glanced in Mr. Harding’s direction.
“With your old lady appearance, I really don’t have the leisure to hit on you. If it weren’t for my employer wanting to ask you a few questions, I wouldn’t bother with you at all.”
Only then did Scarlett carefully examine the man. Hearing him refer to his “employer,” she realized the person before her was merely an attendant. She looked toward the black luxury car.
The black Rolls–Royce sat quietly, the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament particularly eye–catching. The entire vehicle exuded elegance and wealth. Even a fool could tell this was a rich person’s luxury car.
The rear window rolled down halfway, revealing Henry’s handsome face looking in her direction.
Scarlett had seen Henry before and certainly knew who he was.
She stopped arguing with the driver and trotted over to the car, greeting Henry enthusiastically: “Well, if it isn’t my son- in–law! What are you doing here?”
