Chapter 282
He continued with a knowing smile, “Let them fight–the more intensely, the better. When something comes too easily. that boy doesn’t appreciate it.” William’s expression hardened. “Also, go tell that grandson of mine that I won’t have him spending the holidays in a hospital. That minor injury of his hardly justifies occupying a hospital bed and wasting medical
resources.”
He was furious with Henry!
All this time had passed, and still he hadn’t managed to win back Sophia’s heart. Was his grandson an idiot?
If William weren’t so angry that he couldn’t bear to see him, he would have personally taught Henry how to win back his wife.
Mark posed another question: “Sir, Sophia has always spent holidays at the Harding estate. Given the current situation between her and Henry, do you think she’ll come this year?”
The old man considered this before sighing.
“I suppose I’ll have to speak with Sophia myself. She might honor my request and join us for a meal at the estate. She can leave immediately afterward if she wishes. That shouldn’t be too much to ask.”
I pushed open the hospital room door just in time to hear the tail end of William’s statement.
When he spotted me, his eyes immediately brightened. “Sophia, perfect timing! Would you do your old grandfather a favor and join me for a holiday dinner? Please?”
“If you don’t want to see that troublesome grandson of mine, I won’t invite him. How does that sound?” William offered me complete respect and consideration, making it impossible for me to refuse.
After helping Mark finish packing William’s belongings, I collected Billy from school and accompanied the elder Harding back to the estate.
Although every servant in the household knew about/my ongoing divorce proceedings with Henry, and many were undoubtedly eager for gossip, none dared show me anything but respect in William’s presence.
William understood my aversion to Henry and completely avoided mentioning him.
Instead, our conversation focused on Mrs. Davis’s funeral arrangements, and he even specifically asked where Mrs. Davis had been buried.
Henry rushed home and the moment he saw me sitting beside his grandfather, his face lit up with an immediate smile. He quickly crossed the room to sit on the sofa next to me, greeting me with undisguised enthusiasm: “Sophia!” Remembering his grandfather’s warnings about being too hasty, he quickly tempered his expression.
“Welcome home for the holidays,” he added more tentatively.
During this period, although I had visited Henry’s hospital room daily, I had never shown him any warmth, discussing nothing but our divorce.
This had made Henry somewhat apprehensive around me. What troubled him most was that every reason I gave for wanting a divorce was impossible for him to refute.
Chapter 282
Sometimes, he truly hated his former self for acting like such a jerk.
I maintained my composure, shifting slightly to increase the distance between us, acknowledging him with only the slightest nod.
Before coming, I had anticipated this encounter with Henry and had already decided to maintain a neutral demeanor toward him–neither cold nor warm–this was the best mode of interaction between us.
Due to the holiday, Catherine had specifically requested William’s permission for Grace to join the family dinner, releasing her from confinement for one day.
When Grace first saw Sophia, she was ready to launch into a tirade, but Catherine quickly pulled her aside.
“It’s a holiday, don’t you dare cause a scene,” she hissed. “If you keep this up, you’ll go straight back to confinement!”
She released Grace’s arm with a final instruction: “If you can’t stand the sight of Sophia, go wait at the front door for Isabella instead.”
