Chapter 96 Choose One Side
Alexander was caught entirely off guard. “The key isn’t with me. It’s with mom
You don’t have a spare key?”
“Why should I take orders from you?
“Because I’ve cooked you dozens of meals. What have you ever done for me
That shut Alexander up. His eyes flickered with guilt
He headed back to the living room and rummaged through drawers. After a few minutes, he found a spare key.
When he returned to the door, guilt was replaced by irritation. He couldn’t believe he’d been talked into this so easily.
Inside, Amelia heard him approach and called out, “Don’t just stand there, open the door.
“Amelia, swear you won’t slap me anymore.”
Amelia sighed and said without a care, “I swear. No more slapping.”
Satisfied, he unlocked the door. When he saw her, he took a step back. She brushed past him without a word. She wasn’t staying in this house another minute.
Alexander followed close behind, flustered. “You’re just leaving? After all that, you’re not gonna cook me a meal? Seriously? Use me and toos me aside, huh?”
At the door, Amelia turned. Her expression was cold and distant.
Alexander felt something clench in his chest. He turned away. “Whatever. Go. It’s not like I need your cooking. I always knew you didn’t care about me.”
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her get into the car and drive off. He stood there, stunned. She used to make him feel like he mattered. Now, he couldn’t feel a thing.
He wanted to call out, to ask her to stay, but the pride he’d always worn around her wouldn’t let him.
So he watched her leave, He stayed outside, alone in the yard, until Celia and the others returned from dinner.
Milly was in an excellent mood. It was time to settle the Amelia problem once and for all.
But when she checked the room where Amelia had been locked up, it was empty.
Back in the living room, she turned to Alexander. “You let her out, didn’t you?”
Alexander looked sullen. He had started to realize he’d been played. And the accusatory tone only made. him feel worse.
“What else was I supposed to do? That room’s for punishing Mrs. Sally. Amelia isn’t Mrs. Sally.” Milly’s heart sank. He had always been on her side. Now he’s released Amelia without hesitation,

His loyalty was shifting
A chill slid down her spine. Her hand clenched into a fist at her side. She couldn’t let this on Ameltäh to be driven out permanently.
Milly’s eyes filled with tears, her voice soft and wounded. “Alexander, is that really how you see me now! Like I’m the villain!”
Alexander saw that Milly looked so hurt, he wavered. “Milly, I didn’t mean that I’m on your side.
Milly said nothing and went upstairs in silence.
That made him feel even worse. Celia patted his arm and scolded, “Can’t you speak to Milly with a linde more kindness? She’s carrying a baby, you know.”
Alexander felt guilty, so he quickly ran after Milly to apologize.
Upstairs, she refused to open the door. Her face, behind the locked door, was full of resentment.
As her fingers drifted over her stomach, a dark idea formed in her mind.
Amelia had originally planned to keep quiet until Nolan and Milly tied the knot. Lately, she had been taking extra precautions for her safety, as Milly was unpredictable and had no clear plan to counter her.
But during work hours, when she opened the door to Mr. Hale’s office, she came face to face with Nolan.
Standing beside Dylan, he looked distinctly out of place. But when Nolan saw her, he couldn’t help but
sneer.
“What, I show up to report and you just happen to stroll in? Amelia, are you really that obsessed with me?”
Nolan was practically glowing with self–satisfaction.
Amelia resisted the urge to slap that smug smile off his face.
She walked over and set the folder on Dylan’s desk. When he reached to grab it, their fingertips brushed. Amelia quickly pulled her hand back, suddenly reminded of Ms. Grant. These days, she’d been doing her best to avoid him, keeping out of his office and even considering a department transfer.
As she tried to work through her thoughts, Nolan stepped forward and tugged her hand. “Come on, let’s go talk. I’ve got something to say.”
She flung his hand off immediately.
He frowned and smirked again. “Alexander told me everything. He said you’ve been unstable lately over the wedding. He asked me to look after you. Amelia, aren’t you a little too old to be falling apart over something like this?”
