Chapter 87 Elevator of Secrets
“Thank god you’re fine. The elevator should be fine now.”
“Yeah.”
Dylan sounded so indifferent that for a moment, she couldn’t think of anything else to say.
After a while, she sensed that he was about to stand up and quickly reached out to steady his arm.
But just then, the elevator jolted again. She lost her balance and fell backward.
Dylan’s hand shot out to catch her, but in the process, he himself fell back into his wheelchair.
Amelia accidentally landed on his lap, and in that instant, their lips brushed together. She could feel the warmth of that touch so clearly.
Her pupils widened in shock. But before she could react, Dylan pushed her away.
She tumbled to the floor, reaching up to touch her lips in disbelief. Her phone had been flung to the other corner, and now the tension in the air was unbearably thick.,
Amelia wished she could just disappear into a crack in the floor. She’d barely touched Dylan and was immediately pushed away–it was obvious he really disliked women.
t
She’d heard that Dylan was rarely seen with women, and there had never been any talk of him dating anyone over the years.
But then again, her own reputation was in tatters. Of course he didn’t want anything to do with her.
Sobering up instantly, Amelia scrambled to her feet and snatched her phone from the ground.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Hale. I didn’t mean it.”
Dylan said nothing, but his presence had grown so imposing that she could barely breathe.
Her palms were slick with sweat. She began to wonder if she’d survive the night.
Every second that followed was pure torment. She’d never felt time crawl so slowly, until finally, a voice sounded from outside.
“Amelia! Are you alright in there?”
It was Nolan.
For the first time ever, Nolan sounded like an angel to her.
The silence between her and Dylan/stretched on for nearly 20 minutes, and the strange tension in the air was suffocating her.
“I’m fine!” she quickly replied. “When can we get out?”
Nolan had originally wanted to catch up with Amelia and Dylan, but he hadn’t expected the elevator to malfunction. He was starting to believe that Amelia really had lost her memory–otherwise, why would she willingly approach Dylan?

In the past, Amelia had avoided Dylan at all costs. If he were anywhere nearby, she’d always find a way to steer clear.
Two years ago, it was only because of Nolan’s coaxing that Amelia had gotten close to Dylan–and that was when Dylan’s accident happened.
Panicking, Nolan shouted into the elevator. “Uncle Dylan, Amelia was in a car accident before and doesn’t remember a lot of things. Please don’t take her actions to heart. You know she’s never been the brightest.”
Amelia had been grateful for Nolan’s voice, but now she wished he’d just become a mute right then and there.
Buy Nolan wasn’t done.
“Uncle Dylan, if Amelia accidentally offended you, please, for my sake, don’t hold it against her,” he added.
Amelia felt mortified. She really had done something to offend Dylan. In all of Solandis, no one would dare sit on Dylan’s lap and kiss him.
Her cheeks burned with embarrassment as Nolan knocked on the elevator door again.
“Amelia, did you hear me? Don’t do anything inappropriate in front of Uncle Dylan.”
Amelia took a deep breath, her earlier excitement completely gone. “Shut up!”
She’d have been better off saying nothing. Her harsh tone only made Nolan more anxious, and he started yelling at the rescue workers nearby.
“Hurry up! What are you all standing around for?”
Inside the elevator, the atmosphere was so tense it was almost unbearable, but Amelia didn’t dare say a word to Dylan.
Dylan tapped lightly on the armrest of his wheelchair. To Amelia, the sound was like a grim reaper’s summons, each tap echoing in her chest.
She took a deep breath and discreetly wiped the sweat from her palms.
At last, the elevator doors were pried open. Even the manager of Nocturne was waiting outside, and upon seeing Dylan, he quickly pulled out a tissue to wipe the sweat from his brow.
“Mr. Hale, I’m truly sorry.”
Dylan said nothing, but his gaze flickered to Amelia.
Amelia still had the task of escorting Dylan home, so she didn’t dare run off. She hesitated, then moved behind his wheelchair and gave it a gentle push.
Only when he didn’t object did she finally breathe a sigh of relief.
As soon as they exited the elevator, Nolan rushed over, grabbing her and checking her over to make sure she was unharmed.
“You used to hate being near Uncle Dylan, but today you were willing to ride the elevator with him. Amelia, have you really lost your memory?”

Amelia thought Nolan really had a knack for saying the worst possible thing at the worst possible time. She quickly shoved him away.
“No. Since Milly’s pregnant, you should treat her well.”
Nolan looked uncertain again, trying hard to discern the look on Amelia’s face.
