Chapter 163
As Sharon hesitated, the phone suddenly tang.
She glanced at the caller ID–it was Nicholas‘ mom. She thought, ‘Should I answer?‘
Answering might lead Wendy to misunderstand; ignoring it could make Nicholas miss something important.
Before she decided, the call ended. She sighed, returning to her dilemma about the House of Obsidian app, but the phone rang again, it was still Wendys
calling.
This time Sharon answered in case of any emergencies.
“I just realized Shari might have menstrual cramps. I prepared a hot water bag for her tummy. Even in summer, she needs to keep warm,” Wendy said.
Sharon was stunned. She thought, ‘How did Wendy know?‘
When Wendy got no reply, she frowned. “I have said so much; are you even listening?”
Sharon was at a loss.
“Nicholas? Nicholas!” Wendy called.
“It’s me, Wendy,” Sharon said.
Wendy nearly choked. “Shari? I didn’t expect you! Why do you have his phone?”
“He left it with me,” Sharon lied, omitting the “boring” part. Blaming Nicholas seemed wiser in front of an elder. She had to maintain her good–girl act.
“He’s so forgetful,” Wendy sighed, happily distracted. “Shari, pay more attention to your period. Nicholas said you’re unwell–sounds like you’ve neglected this before.”
Sharon blushed, whispering, “No one ever taught me.”
At the Martins‘, Alyssa resented her; Martin, as a man, couldn’t help. Sharon lacked basic knowledge.
Now, receiving Wendy’s concern, Sharon felt a little embarrassed.
Wendy’s heart ached. Sharon was so obedient, with no parents–Wendy imagined how hard her life had been.
“Don’t worry, you have me now. Think of me as your mom. Ask me anything about this, okay?” Wendy said gently.
“Okay,” Sharon replied softly.
Wendy’s maternal instincts surged. “I’ve told Nicholas what to do–no cold food, no overexertion. Skip the freshman camp and rest, got it?”
“Okay.” Sharon nodded, looking perfectly docile–no trace of her usual edge. She loved being cared for, and she liked Wendy.
They chatted for an hour before Wendy hung up reluctantly, still worried. A girl without parents needed all the care she could get.
As soon as Wendy ended the call, a grumpy man entered. Arnold frowned, “Done yet?”
Wendy had promised an hour, but two had passed.
“Just finished talking to Shari. Lost track of time,” she said, glaring at her husband. “You go to the party alone–I have things to do.”
“More important than me?” Arnold pouted.

He’d waited two hours for her to get ready, only to be ditched.
Wendy kissed his cheek. “Shari’s been through so much.”
“I’m the one suffering here,” said Arnold almost in tears since his darling wouldn’t attend a party with him.
“Your son messaged nie for help—Shari’s on her period and has no female family. Can you believe she’s never had anyone care? I’m furious, vand,
Amold softened, smirking. “The brat finally got a taste of his own medicine.”
“You were no better back then. Are all Baxter men this clueless?” Wendy teased.
Arnold shifted awkwardly at the reminder.
“Go to the party alone, darling. I’m drafting a diet plan for
Arnold sighed helplessly.
Shari and sending it to the academy later,” Wendy said, rushing off excitedly.
The afternoon passed quickly. Nicholas headed straight
the infirmary after training.
“Mr. Baxter,” Margaret called, “I need to ask something.”
“Speak,” he said.
“Some girls are on their period and want to take leave. Is that allowed?” Margaret said.
Nicholas had refused earlier, but Sharon was now resting in the infirmary.
He paused, then nodded. “Yes.”
Before, he’d have refused. But Sharon’s case made him realize girls needed understanding.
Margaret smiled. “Thank you.”
She’d doubted he’d agree, but he’d conceded instantly. Before she could say more, he hurried off, likely to the infirmary.
Her smile faded. Everyone had seen how he’d rushed Sharon to the infirmary. In years by his side, she’d never seen him lose his cool and carry a woman in panic.
Love, she thought, must be a powerful thing.
