The relief on Alpha Ulysses‘ face was palpable. He bowed his head in gratitude, tears still streaming down his cheeks.
As we left the office, my mind was still reeling from everything I’d learned. The organization was recruiting minors, manipulating them into committing act of treason. And they had nearly succeeded in their plan to overthrow Augustin’s rule. We needed to find the leaders, and fast.
By the time we reached the dining room for dinner, I was emotionally exhausted. The revelations about Fox had shaken me, and I was grateful for the distraction of a family meal.
Adryx and Scarlett were already seated, along with Bryloch, Amelia, Evanth, and Ruby. Elowen Hamilton was also present, hovering near Evanth with a possessive air.
As we took our seats, Amelia shot Elowen a cold look. “What are you doing here?”
she
asked sharply. “This is a family dinner.”
Elowen lifted her chin defiantly. “I’m with Evanth.”
Amelia’s eyes narrowed. “You have no formal relationship with my son. Go eat somewhere else.”
Elowen turned to Evanth, clearly expecting him to defend her. Instead, he sighed heavily.
“Elowen, we broke up yesterday morning,” he said, sounding tired. “You refused to leave.”
The table fell silent.
‘I’m tired of you pushing me to challenge my brother for the Alpha King position,” Evanth continued, “You’ve made me resent him, made me feel inadequate. I don’t have the alpha gene. I’m not a leader. And your pressure nearly cost me my life.”
Elowen’s face flushed with anger. “That’s not why, and you know it. It’s because of her,” she spat, pointing at Ruby, who sat quietly beside Evanth. “You’ve been fucking that whore behind my back!”
“Don’t call her that,” Evanth growled, his eyes flashing dangerously. “Ruby is more pure than you’ll ever be. She comes from a noble family, is well–educated, and makes me a better person. She accepts me for who I am, not who you want me to be. Being with her is the best decision I’ve ever made.”
To everyone’s shock, Evanth suddenly dropped to one knee beside Ruby’s chair, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket.
“Ruby,” he said, his voice suddenly gentle. “I know this is sudden, but I’ve never been more certain of anything in my life. Will you-*
“Yes!” Ruby exclaimed before he could finish, throwing her arms around his neck. “Yes, I will marry you!”
The dining room erupted in cheers and applause. I found myself tearing up at the romantic gesture, and Augustin squeezed my hand under the table.
Elowen let out a sob and ran from the room, her face streaked with tears. I felt a twinge of sympathy for her. She had been with Evanth for years without receiving a proposal, only to watch him propose to someone else. But based on what Evanth had said, a marriage to Elowen would have been miserable for both of them.
“Congratulations!” I called out, genuinely happy for the couple. Ruby was blushing furiously as Evanth slipped the ring onto her finger.
Amelia looked pleased, though not surprised. I suspected she might have known about the proposal in advance. Even Augustin was smiling, offering his brother a rare look of approval.
As dinner was winding down, Bryloch stood and cleared his throat. “While we’re celebrating, he announced, “Scarlett and I have some news of our own.”
Scarlett beamed up at him, her eyes sparkling.
“We’re expecting,” Bryloch said proudly, Scarlett is four weeks pregnant.”

Chapter 227
Another round of cheers filled the dining room. I glanced at Freya, who looked relieved. She had already shown signs of pregnancy, and I knew the had bet hesitating about whether to caress her baby bump in front of Scarlett, who longed to be pregnant.
I remembered how just a few days ago, Scarlett had cried to me about not being able to get pregnant. I wondered if the pregnancy tests she’d been using were faulty. I made a mental note to ask her about it later.
For now, though, I was content to celebrate these moments of joy amidst all the darkness we’d been facing.
