I maintained a calm expression as I led Henry and Isabella toward the hospital tom. I kept that professional fake smile, my voice trendy and polite as I explained the hospital policies.
This is room 317. The call button is here if you need assistance, I explained mechanically, pointing to the wall panel. The doctor will be making rounds in about an hour. Is there anything else you need at the moment?
Isabella chung tightly to Henry’s arm, as if afraid he might disappear if she loosened her grip for even clearly expecting me to burn with jealousy and lose control in front of her.
second. Her eyes darted between Henry and me,
She would be disappointed.
Last night, the moment I heard Henry’s car pull away from the mansion to rush to Isabella’s side, something inside me had finally broken.
Wake up, Sophia! Stop losing your mind over a man who isn’t worth it!
I noticed the lipstick mark on Henry’s collar the moment I first saw them at reception. That lipstick was unmistakably Isabella’s. The evidence of what they’d done last night was literally written on his body. I didn’t need to ask questions; the answers were obvious.
What puzzled me was why Henry still refused to grant me a divorce? He had Isabella now–the woman he’d always loved. Why continue this farce?
“Nurse Sophia,” Isabella’s sickeningly sweet voice broke through my thoughts. “Could you get me another pillow? This one is so uncomfortable.”
“Of course, Miss Scott. I’ll have someone bring that right
away.”
I caught Henry staring at me, his dark eyes searching my face for something–anger, jealousy, hurt. He found nothing. To him, I had become a blank page.
“Sophia, Henry began, taking a step toward me. “I-”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Harding,” I cut him off smoothly. “I have other patients waiting. If you need anything else, please use the call button.”
Without waiting for his response, I turned and walked out, feeling his gaze burning into my back. His watchful eyes followed me down the hallway, but I didn’t look back. Not once.
As the door closed behind me, I heard Isabella’s voice: “Henry, why are you staring at the door? I’m right here.”
Isabella couldn’t understand what was happening. She had expected tears, accusations, a jealous outburst–anything but this calm indifference. Where had the heartbroken Sophia gone? Where was the desperate woman who had fought so hard for her husband’s attention?
Henry stood frozen by the window, his eyes fixed on the hospital parking lot below, searching for a familiar figure among the crowd.
“She doesn’t even seem upset,” Isabella said, carefully observing his profile. “After what happened between us last night, I expected her to make a scene.”
Henry’s jaw tightened.
Last night…
What exactly had happened between them? His memories were confused, fragmented. Isabella had thrown herself at him, but he’d pushed her away, hadn’t he? He remembered helping her back into her clothes…
‘Henry, Isabella called, her voice deliberately fragile. “Are you angry with me? You’ve barely looked
at
me since we arrived.”
He finally turned to face her. “I need to get back to the office. I have a board meeting in an hour.”
Isabella’s face flashed with real panic. “But you just got here! You can’t leave me alone already.”
Henry replied flatly, “You have your caretaker, and the hospital staff. I’ll come back this evening.”
