Karen jumped in, her voice tense. “Exactly. It isn’t even confirmed yet, and you’re already so desperate to take over as head of the family?”
Madeline nudged her son and urged him, “Say something, will you? You’re the family head now?
Wayne looked at her with a trace of mockery. “What exactly do you want me to say?” He pondered, Sharon came in swinging, and we’re in no shape to push back. Damn it. I’m just too weak
Karen pressed on. “Wayne, you’re the head of the family too. Do something. We can’t let Sharon win.”
She thought, Wayne loses his position, what will happen to me?‘m not going to live like that. I won’t let people laugh at

With that, she turned around, smiled at her brothers, and said, “Come on. Let’s get some air. It’s still early anyway.” She had no intention of spending
another second with those people.
As Sharon walked out all eight of her brothers followed, and the main hall suddenly felt empty.
Brent spoke up. “Let’s head out too, Nick.”
Roxanne suddenly snapped, “Stop right there, Nicholas Why are you siding with that girl? Don’t you have anything to say for yourself? Aren’t you supposed to be man?
“Don’t you care about the Baxter family’s reputation, or are you really okay with everyone thinking you’re completely under her thumb?”
At that, Brant’s face darkened instantly. “Watch your words, Mrs. Vance.
He thought imitably, ‘What the hell is she talking about? Since when is Nick planning to let himself be leashed like that?”
Karen chimed in right after, “That’s right, Grandma. Nick is not some weak–willed guy who’d let himself be bossed around like that. He’s the Baster family’s future head. Why would he throw that away to be some kind of trophy husband?”
It sounded like she was defending Nicholas, but in truth, she’d just cornered him into an impossible position.
No man would admit to that without looking pathetic. But Nicholas? He wasn’t just any man.
He stood there calmly, one hand in his pocket, shirt cuff peeking out neatly at his wrist. His face was unreadable as he asked, “And what’s that got to do with any of you?”
Hearing that, both Roxanne and Karen immediately fell silent, at a complete loss for words. Karen, especially, couldn’t figure out why things were playing out so differently from what she’d imagined.
While they stood there stunned, Nicholas turned on his heel without hesitation, leaving behind nothing but a cool, distant figure. Inwardly, he grumbled, ‘Seriously! Can’t I have a moment alone with my fiance? Why does someone always have to butt in?”
Brent stayed where he was and gave a slow clap. Nicely done, Nick.” He had to admit, Nicholas really knew how to handle those scheming types, and he felt like he’d learned something new today.
Those from Vance Mansion who remained in the main hall exchanged glances, their confidence from earlier nowhere to be found. Sharon’s one hundred million Hunter Coins had left them all thoroughly embarrassed.
Madeline finally burst out, frustrated. “Now is not the time to care about saving face, Mrs. Vancel Just apologize already.”

“You won’t even be the matriarch of the Vance family anymore. If someone else inherits the family, do you really think they’ll keep you around? Please. Don’t kid yourself.”
Wayne frowned, “Mom, just stop talking”
Madeline shot back, “No. Your position as the successor is already on the line! What’s the point of staying quiet now? I’m saying it all today.
“Either Mrs. Vance apologizes, or once we lose the inheritance, we pack up and leave. As far as tradition goes, Sharon’s side should be the one taking care of Mrs. Vance anyway.”
She grumbled inwardly, “Whoever inherits the Vance family is the one who has to take care of the old lady.”
