It had been over ten years since those events and digging up the truth wouldn’t be easy. Worse, he couldn’t let the Robinsons find out he was investigating. Everything had to be done. secretly, which slowed things down even more.
However, as time passed and his assistant still hadn’t called, Tyler grew increasingly anxious.
He couldn’t tell if he was hoping to uncover Clara’s true colors or was just trying to find a reason to keep hating Clarine.
His mind was in a mess, with a thousand threads and he couldn’t figure it out.
He stared intently at his phone screen, the ashtray already overflowing with cigarette butts.
The car was thick with the smell of smoke.
Suddenly, his phone vibrated. He eagerly answered, “Did you find something?”
Clara’s voice came from the other end. “Found something? Tyler, what are you looking into?”
Tyler then realized it was Clara calling him.
He took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down. “Nothing, it’s about work. Is there something you need?”
Clara’s sweet, coquettish voice drifted through the phone. “Tyler, you promised you’d come see me at the hospital today.”
“Sorry, I just got to New York and I’m still dealing with company matters.”
“Really? So, are you still coming? I miss you so much, I haven’t seen you in days.”
When hearing the sickeningly sweet voice on the other end, Tyler felt an inexplicable chill.
Clara’s words from the hospital room kept replaying in his mind.
But the investigation results weren’t out yet, so he absolutely couldn’t expose himself.
“Tyler, why aren’t you saying anything? Oh, right, the trial is coming up soon. You, you’ll help me right?”
Tyler said with the last bit of patience, “I will see you later. You have a good rest and listen to the doctor, okay?”
Clara’s answer came from the other end of the phone.
He didn’t hesitate anymore and hung up the phone directly.
The investigation results did not come out until midnight.
Late at night, Tyler sat in the study, watching the assistant come in with several file bags.
“Mr. Jacobson, I have checked what you want.”
When the assistant handed the file to Tyler, he hesitated. “The things recorded in it may be different from what you thought before. Please be mentally prepared in advance.”
Tyler took a deep breath, tore open the envelope with trembling fingers and took the documents. inside.
Chapter 15
8:07 pm
The first page: When Clarine was three, Clara’s biological mother showed up and demanded that Clarine’s mother divorce their father.
That fight lasted a whole month and after that, Clarine’s mother was harassed constantly.
At four, her mother was diagnosed with late–stage cancer.
At five, as she lay on her deathbed, Clara’s mother came to taunt her.
Clarine’s mother died, driven to her grave by rage and despair, leaving her daughter completely alone.
At Clara’s tenth birthday party, she had provoked Clarine first.
“Your mom’s dead. When’s it your turn?”
“My mom said once you’re gone, I’ll be the only daughter of the Robinsons and everything will be mine!”
She had tried to push Clarine into the pool but missed and fell in herself.
At eighteen, Clara made up a lie that led their father to cut off Clarine’s college tuition and living
expenses.
Clarine had no choice but to work multiple jobs, even washing dishes in restaurant kitchens.
Tyler still remembers that time when Clarine asked him to borrow money.
But how had he responded?
“Is the Robinsons‘ heiress trying to scam me for money? Clarine, you’re truly disgusting.”
