Chapter 16
“He told me I was going to a… a warm place, that I would receive bronzes that would sustain me for the rest of my life, and that I would only need to be with the… with the guy for a year and give him a child! I know it sounds strange and horrible to have a child with a stranger like this, but it was supposed to change my life!” I am screaming now, panicking, and stuttering.
But instead of reacting with more anger, Kaleo stares deeply into my eyes, with his red irises, and breathes slowly, almost theatrically. It’s as if he wants me to mimic him, like in the birthing films I’ve seen.
“I can feel your heart, it’s beating so fast, that’s not good for such a small being like you.” The translator on the floor echoes again, and that only makes me cry more. How can he feel my heart like that? “Now listen to me, female, don’t panic. He lied to you, didn’t he? That Unob.”
“Yes, h–he… he…” I can’t even finish the sentence, I feel small and stupid, and so scared that it’s hard to form anything other than sobs and desperate screams.
“He lied to me too, and I will make him pay for it, don’t worry, I will bring that male to you.” The real Kaleo has a cold tone in his voice.
“What are you going to do with him?” I ask, focusing on his warm touch on me. He keeps his hands on my torso, bent over, trying to keep us at least a little level.
“We’ll decide later, when you’re settled in my cabin, after we marry.”
“I can’t settle, I have to leave, I… I…”
“Ayáth, Melisha,” he repeats, interrupting my sentence, and moves his face closer to mine, which should make me nervous, but it doesn’t.
I mean, I do get nervous, but not in the way I did before. It’s more of a huge curiosity mixed with a lot of apprehension.
I’m fixated on this enormous man’s face, with strong features, absorbing every one of his movements, even when his red eyes unexpectedly land on my lips. Something inside me stirs with this attention, a huge warmth, a strange and unwelcome desire.

Chapter 16
I know and yet don’t know what he’s going to do, but I’m so out of it that I freeze instead of stopping him. He slowly presses his full lips against mine, and it feels like I’m going to faint again.
Then Kaleo rubs his mouth on mine. It’s not a kiss, there’s no tongue or sound. It’s a caress, maybe something from his species. He presses his bottom lip on mine and rubs slowly.
“Ayáth,” he whispers against my mouth, his warm breath making me pulse between my thighs, then he moves up and rubs his top lip on the tip of my nose before pulling away.
It wasn’t a kiss with tongue, it was just… contact. A lot of contact. With his immense warmth and scent taking over me and erasing my panic like an eraser.
Until I notice something I don’t know when started. A constant, low sound, like something I’ve only seen in Earth films because cats don’t exist off Earth. It’s the sound of purring, and it comes from Kaleo, from his huge chest, which now that I look more closely, has a black tattoo with lines that cross and intertwine in a smooth way I wouldn’t even know how to start explaining. They’re like paths that end in crossed arrow tips.
“I don’t know what ‘Ayáth‘ means,” I whisper, feeling like a cloud in the sky. He really managed to take me out of my near–breakdown, and I don’t quite know how I am now.
“Selvaria is a closed planet, few know our language, so this translator doesn’t seem good enough. But I know a male who will install my language in your ear.”
The hologram doesn’t do justice to what I hear before it echoes Kaleo’s words in translation. His real tone is so calm and husky that it hypnotizes me. I’m glued to his face and even take a better look at him. Kaleo has pointy ears, but not too big, and even though his face is well–tanned like a human’s, there are little blue spots here and there.
“I understand…”
“Don’t open the door like that again, Melissa, please.” He’s literally pleading now, his red eyes fully focused on me. “The cold on my planet is too strong for you, but inside my house, I have heaters in every room.”
Even in the state I’m in right now, I realize it won’t help to say that I have to leave, so I just nod and close my eyes for a few seconds because without looking at his face, I think I can think more clearly.

And it really works because Kaleo is very intense and messes with my mind.
It doesn’t matter that I technically don’t understand what he says, his body language and the way he’s handling this tell me that Kaleo wants to help me, that he wants to calm me down, but they also tell me that he’s not the type to give up easily, to simply let me go just because I ask.
Kaleo paid, he has the transfer documentation, and the space laws are a nightmare, even if I was deceived. It’s hard to know where each jurisdiction ends, and when no one understands each other, the case goes to the general judges, and they are very slow because they have long lives and many cases. Maybe my face will already be all wrinkled when something is decided.
That’s why I need to be strategic, and the best thing to do is to go slowly. Slowly, I will convince him to let me go, or I will have to run.
That’s it, Melissa. Let’s take it slow.
“Alright, just stop touching me now?” I ask, since all this contact is getting out of control, and he can do that, even though it’s clear he doesn’t want to.
