Chapter 8
“There’s no way Faye’s father would do something so insane.”
“Vivian, when did you become this vicious?”
I looked at him.
And my heart… cracked open. Raw. Bleeding.
He didn’t even check.
Didn’t hesitate to believe the worst in me.
He’d forgotten, hadn’t he?
The man who once whispered baby over and over, who shielded me like I was the only thing that
mattered.
Suddenly, the doctor burst from the emergency room.
“He’s losing blood fast. We need a donor now–A–positive. Does anyone match?”
Faye was sobbing. “I’m his daughter–I can’t!”
Rhett turned to me without a hint of hesitation.
“She’s A–positive. Let her donate.”
I looked up, stunned.
“I won’t.”
“You hit him. You’re responsible.”
His voice was harsh, threatening.
“If anything happens to him, I won’t let it go.”
I felt like ice was crawling through my veins. My voice shook.

“You want to do this again? Like last time? You already killed my parents–now you want to kill me
too?”
His pupils flickered.
The words hit him.
But only for a second.
Then he barked, “Hold her down. Draw the blood.”
The bodyguards pinned me to the donor chair.
The needle stabbed into my vein.
Pain shot through my fingers.
The blood bag slowly filled.
And my consciousness… began to fade.
I remembered-
How I used to be anemic.
How, back then, even the tiniest cut would send him into a panic, like the world was ending.
Now he stood there, watching them drain my blood-
For a man who faked an injury.
My vision turned black.
I passed out.
When I woke up, it was already dark.
Weak and dizzy, I pushed myself off the hospital bed.
I had to leave.
As I passed a private room, I heard a sweet, familiar voice.

Chapter 8
“Mom, Dad, this is Rhett–my boyfriend.”
My steps froze.
Through the cracked door, I saw him.
Rhett, with his arm around her waist.
His voice gentle–gentler than I remembered.
“Don’t worry. I’ll never let Faye get hurt again.”
Faye’s mother beamed. “She’s so lucky to have found a man like you.”
I stood there in the hallway, frozen in place.
Years ago, he held my waist, looked my parents in the eye, and promised:
“Don’t worry. I’ll protect Vivian with everything I have.”
Now, those words belonged to someone else.
So that’s what your promises are worth, Rhett.
They expire faster than milk.
I bit my lip hard-
Until I tasted blood.
Then turned and walked away.
Outside, I checked my phone.
Three days.
Three more days until the paperwork was finalized.
Until my identity was wiped clean.
In three days, I’ll be completely gone, and no matter how hard he looks, he’ll never be able to find me again.

Chapter 8
Back home, I went straight to packing the few things I intended to take.
Just a few changes of clothes, my ID, and my passport.
Everything else–I didn’t want any of it.
As I shoved the passport into my bag, the door suddenly burst open.
Rhett stood in the doorway. Behind him, Faye was sobbing miserably, tears streaming down her face.
“Dad’s out of danger now… but he really suffered,” she sniffled, tears falling like rain.
Rhett gently wiped them away. “Don’t cry. I’m making things right for you, aren’t I?”
He turned to me, his tone casual–too casual.
“What do you want for an apology? As long as it’s not too much, I’ll agree.”
Faye glanced at me timidly, then said in a whisper,
“I… I want Vivian to spend a few days in jail.”
I let out a short laugh. But before I could respond, Rhett frowned.
“Faye, that’s a bit much.”
