Chapter 7
She narrowed her eyes, as if trying to read between my words.
I thought she had believed it.
But in the next second, she lunged forward, grabbed my hand-
And slapped herself across the face.
Smack-!
The sound rang through the entire ballroom.
Rhett burst in right as she staggered back, clutching her face and sobbing.
“Vivian!” he bellowed. “You’re hurting her again?!”
“I didn’t.”
“I saw it!” He grabbed my wrist–so hard I felt the bones grind together.
“Didn’t the last lesson teach you enough? I told you–whatever you do to her, I’ll pay you back tenfold!”
Faye cried harder, shaking her head. “It’s okay… really…”
Rhett gently wiped her tears.
“You have me. What are you afraid of?”
“I said you could do anything. Even if the sky falls, I’ll hold it

“Hold her.”

He looked at Faye. “However she hit you–hit her ten times harder.”
Faye hesitated, shrinking back. “I… I can’t…”
“I’ll help you.”
He grabbed her hand.
And slapped me.
Smack.
“That’s for teaching you to fight back.”
Smack.
“That’s for teaching you not to be afraid.”
Smack. Smack. Smack.
The third. The fourth. The fifth.
Each one louder than the last.
My ears rang. My vision blurred. Blood dripped from the corner of my lips.
Still, I clenched my teeth.
Didn’t make a sound.
By the tenth slap, he finally let go.
The room was filled with murmurs.
“Poor Mrs. Sinclair. Isn’t it her birthday today?”
“Serves her right. She bullied the mistress–what did she expect?”
Rhett gently took Faye’s hand. “Does it hurt? Let’s get some medicine on it.”
Then, he scooped her up in his arms–like a scene out of a romantic movie-

And walked out.
Without looking back.
The bodyguards let go of me.
I collapsed onto the floor. My face burned. Skin raw.
But what hurt more–wasn’t my body.
It was my heart.
Torn wide open, exposed to the cold.
Rhett…
I regret it.
I regret loving you.
God, I regret it so much.
I staggered out of the ballroom, my cheek still burning. Blood had dried at the corner of my mouth, sticky against my skin.
I didn’t call the driver, I drove myself to the hospital.
While the doctor treated my injuries, I stared into the mirror.
Half of my face was swollen.
My lips were split.
Bloodshot eyes stared back at me, hollow and exhausted.
What a mess.
I tried to smile-
The moment I moved my mouth, pain tore through my face and I sucked in a sharp breath.
Once my wounds were dressed, I headed back to the car.

But in the parking lot, I was blocked.
Faye’s parents.
They stood on either side of the driver’s door, their expressions pitiful, pleading.
“Miss Vivian,” her mother said tearfully. “Please… don’t hold on to the title of Mrs. Sinclair anymore. For Faye’s sake… give it up, will you?”
I stared at them, voice cold.
“Move.”
“Faye truly loves Mr. Sinclair. Can’t you give them your blessing?”
“I said–move.”
I didn’t want to waste another word.
I shoved them aside, yanked the door open, and climbed in.
But just as I stepped on the gas–Faye’s father lunged straight toward the car.
Bang!
I didn’t even register what had happened until I saw him on the ground, groaning in pain, clutching his leg.
Faye’s mother let out a shriek and rushed to his side.
I sat frozen, hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white.
He did it on purpose.
He threw himself at the car.
But there was no time to think about it, I rushed out of the car and lifted him into the car and drove
him to ER.
In the hospital hallway, Faye came running in.
And without warning–slapped me across the face.

Smack!
My head snapped to the side. The buzzing in my ears drowned out everything.
“Vivian!” she cried, her voice trembling. “You can hate me all you want–but why hurt my parents?!”
The bandages on my face split open again. Blood seeped out.
But I didn’t feel a thing.
“He ran in front of the car himself,” I said coldly.
“Lie better if you’re going to lie!”
Rhett’s voice cut through like ice.
