Chapter 6
Sensing my silence, his tone softened, like coaxing a child who’d thrown a tantrum.
“This was just a lesson.”
Then he added: “I told you–stop going against Faye, and I’ll come home. Give it time.”
“It’s your birthday in a few days. I’ll throw you a party. Consider it a peace offering.”
I opened my mouth to say no-
But he hung up before I could.
After that, my social media feed was full of Faye.
Photos of her and Rhett on a yacht.
Caption: “He said I wanted to see the ocean, so he bought me an island.”
Another post:
“He’s allergic to cat hair, but adopted a ragdoll just for me~”
And this-
“His whole camera roll? Just me. Teehee.”
If it had been before, I might’ve broken down.
Now?
I felt nothing.
On the night of the party, Rhett came to pick me up himself.
He was alone.
“Not bringing Faye tonight?” I asked coolly.

He frowned.
“I’ll try to keep you two apart in the future. No point upsetting you.”
I gave a hollow smile.
It wasn’t about upsetting me.
He just didn’t want me to hurt her.
In his mind, I was already the cruel one.
The jealous, bitter wife.
The party was extravagant. He held my hand the whole time, gave me jewelry, even gifted me a famous painting. Leaning in, he whispered by my ear like a lover trying to win favor:
“This time… I finally made it up to you, right?”
I looked at him–and suddenly remembered the past.
Back then, whenever he upset me, he’d do the same. Lower his pride, shower me with gifts. And I
always forgave him so easily.
But this time… was different.
He’d threatened me with my parents‘ lives.
He’d crushed my dignity beneath his feet.
He’d auctioned off my most private photos for the world to see.
Even if he laid the whole world at my feet-
It wouldn’t make up for what he did.
I was just about to respond when the ballroom doors were thrown open.
Faye stood there in a white gown, looking timid and frail.
Rhett’s expression turned hard immediately. “Didn’t I tell you to stay at the villa?”

Her eyes brimmed with tears, her voice soft like a scared kitten.
“I… I just wanted to celebrate Vivian’s birthday. I even brought a gift…”
“I don’t want to see you.” My voice was ice.
But Rhett waved over a server to seat her, then leaned close to whisper in my ear:
“She came in good faith. Can’t you just let go of the past?”
It was my birthday party.
And yet his eyes never once left her.
When the band began to play a waltz, he took my hand.
But then–he noticed Faye’s teary eyes.
In the next second, he let go of me and walked straight toward her.
I stood in the corner, watching them dance, bodies pressed close, like no one else existed.
Dead inside.
When the music ended, Faye pouted and said her heels were hurting her feet.
Rhett didn’t hesitate. He went downstairs himself to buy her a pair of flats.
The moment he disappeared, she walked up to me, waving her phone.
“Vivian, you probably don’t know this,” she said with a smug little smile.
“All those gifts Rhett gave you tonight? They were leftovers–things I rejected.”
She scrolled through her messages and shoved the screen in my face.
“See? Before coming to your party, he had to check in with me. He said, ‘Baby, just be patient. I’ll be back soon.“”
My heart sank like a stone to the bottom of an ocean.
I stared at her, voice low: “What is it you want from me?”

“I want your place,” she said, eyes gleaming.
I looked her straight in the eye, my voice calm.
“You’ll get it. Very soon. I’ll give it up completely.”
