Chapter 4
But before he could move, Faye grabbed his arm, sobbing, “Rhett, it’s not Vivian’s fault… I should’ve known better than to think I could stay. I’ll leave now…”
She took one step-
He yanked her back into his arms.
“I finally got you back. You want to disappear again? You trying to kill me?”
He clutched her tightly, as if she were something precious that had nearly slipped through his
fingers.
Then he looked at me. His gaze was ice.
“I’ll make sure you pay for this.”
I was thrown into the cold storage room.
The bodyguards dragged me, kicking and shouting. “Rhett! Check the footage! It wasn’t me!”
He didn’t even glance my way. Just said coldly, “I don’t need to check. I believe her.”
The freezer door slammed shut.
Darkness and freezing air swallowed me whole.
I curled up in a corner, shaking.
But the cold in my heart was worse than anything the room could inflict.
So this was his idea of love?
The one he claimed to care for the most?
Tears slid down my cheeks.
I had always been sensitive to cold. After we got married, he had a full climate–control system installed, even kept the garden at spring temperatures year–round.

In the winter, he used to press my freezing hands and feet against his chest, smiling as he said, “I’ll be your warmth for the rest of your life.”
Now?
Now those promises felt like lies. Beautiful lies–meant only for the moment they were spoken.
The next day, just before I lost consciousness from the cold, the door finally opened.
There were countless times last night when I thought I was going to die inside the cold room, but thinking about what was written on the note my lawyer slipped me, I told myself I had to hang in
there.
A bodyguard stood in the doorway, face blank.
“Mr. Sinclair said if this happens again, your punishment won’t be this light.”
I pulled myself up with the icy wall, staggering out with trembling limbs, teeth chattering
uncontrollably.
-There won’t be a next time.
Soon, I’ll make sure Rhett Sinclair is erased from my life.
Permanently.
That evening, his assistant delivered a designer gown and a set of jewelry. There was a charity
auction tonight, and I was expected to attend.
So I went.
And there, at the entrance of the ballroom–I saw her.
Faye, in a custom couture gown. She was wearing that diamond necklace Rhett had spent seven figures on at last month’s auction.
I stopped and looked at him.
“She’s here too? Then what exactly am I doing here?”
He shrugged like it was nothing. “Wasn’t planning to bring her. But she’s never been to an event like
this–she insisted. So I let her come.”

Then he added, like talking to a spoiled child, “Vivian, don’t be petty.”
My hands trembled slightly.
I wasn’t being petty.
I just never thought… That he wouldn’t even spare me a shred of dignity.
He never once considered how it would look, bringing both wife and mistress to the same event-
What people would say.
How I’d be laughed at.
He entered the ballroom with Faye hanging on his arm, grinning sweetly, victorious.
Behind me, I heard whispers.
“Mr. Sinclair and his wife look so perfect together… what a beautiful couple.”
“You’ve got it backward. That one’s the wife. The girl on his arm? Just a kept woman.”
“Oh… but look at how much he dotes on her. Everything she wears is luxury–grade. The wife… looks
more like the spare.”
My nails dug into my palm.
When the auction began, I casually placed a few bids.
Every time I bid–Faye followed, raising me by just one dollar.
The crowd chuckled quietly.
“Never seen a mistress publicly humiliate the wife before. First time for everything.”
Expressionless, I slowly raised my hand and made a gesture to the auctioneer.
A signal meaning: no limit. I’ll pay any price. This item is mine.
Faye’s face instantly went pale.
She tugged Rhett’s sleeve, eyes watering. “Rhett… I really like that one…”

He frowned and looked at me.
“Vivian. Let her have it.”
“No.”
I met his eyes, voice steady.
