Chapter 60
“What? You’ll use Billy against me again? I felt reckless, no longer caring about consequences. Go ahead, Henry, Show everyone exactly what kind of fa
you are.
I saw it then a flicker of actual shame in his eyes before they hardened again.
“James, Henry said, his voice controlled once more, “explain to Mrs. Harding what we’ve found. Then bring her to the precinct.
Without waiting for a response, Henry stalked away, his phone already at his ear. I watched him go, thinking about how this once seemingly perfect man now felt so strange to me.
“Mrs. Harding, lames carefully began, this incident appears to have been targeted specifically, not a random attack.”
A chill ran down my spine. “Someone wanted to deliberately hurt us?”
“It appears so. The driver made multiple passes, and security footage shows he had photos of you and Master Billy. He knew your routine.”
The thought of someone watching us made me physically ill.
“That’s why Mr. Harding ordered the investigation,” James continued quietly. “He was… quite disturbed by the findings.
The ride to the police station was awkwardly silent. Henry sat beside me in the back of his luxury sedan, though we both stayed firmly pressed against our respective doors, maintaining as much distance as possible.
I stared out the window, thinking about what James had told me. Had Henry really been concerned for our safety? The memory of that night five years ago surfaced unbidden–when Henry found me on the cliff edge, desperate and alone. Even while suffering from Isabella’s departure, he had saved me.
Did that man still exist somewhere inside this cold stranger beside me?
“You’re staring, Henry observed without looking at me.
I quickly averted my gaze.
‘We’re here,” James stopped the car at the entrance to the police station,
The police captain personally greeted us at the entrance, his deference clearly due to Henry’s status.
“Mr. Harding,” he nodded, then turned to me. “Mrs. Harding. Thank you both for coming.”
‘I’ve brought my wife to identify the suspect,” Henry said, his tone brooking no argument.
My wife. The casual claim sent an odd shiver through me. In five years of marriage, I’d rarely heard Henry acknowledge me as his wife in public. Usually I was just “Sophia” or, when he was being particularly cold, “Ms. Wilson.”
“Of course, sir, the captain nodded. “We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.”
As we were led through the station, I felt Henry’s hand remain at my back. This felt… strange. Almost as if we were a normal couple dealing with a troubling situation together.
Don’t be ridiculous, I chided myself. He’s just maintaining appearances in public.
But a small flutter remained in my heart nonetheless.
The captain showed us into a small room with a one–way mirror looking into an interrogation room. Inside sat a thin young man with dishevele handcuffed to the table. His body language screamed hostility, his eyes darting around the room as if looking for escape routes.
“This is the man we believe was driving the vehicle,” the captain explained. “Based on traffic camera footage and witness statements, we’re confident he was involved. But your identification would be decisive in value.”

I stepped closer to the glass, studying the man. Through he wasn’t wearing a mask or cap now, there was something horribly familiar that had stared at me with such haired as he’d swerved toward my son.
n’s him!
I said suddenly, my words definitive. I remember his eyes. And there’s a mole–right there, near his right eyebrows.”
I felt Henry stiffen beside me, his hand at my back suddenly tense. ‘You’re certain?” he asked, his voice tight with barely controlled fury
“Yes, I nodded, unable to tear my eyes away from the man who had tried to kill my son. That’s him.”
