Chapter 8
Still in a daze, Mom signed the papers to collect my body. In the days that followed, she
never went back to the hospital.
Aside from arranging my funeral, she spent each day lying in bed, staring at the ceiling blankly.
What surprised me most was that her hair turned gray overnight. She looked like she had aged ten years in just a few days. She barely ate and looked so gaunt and pale, as if she were gravely ill herself.
Eventually, the day of my funeral arrived.
Perhaps out of guilt, Mom made the ceremony fairly grand. All our relatives and doctors from the hospital showed up, whispering quietly among themselves..
Over the years, everyone knew how openly she favored Sean and how much she despised me. But knowing what her temper was like, no one wanted to provoke her. They all simply
stood by and did nothing.
Apart from them, Dad and Yvonne also showed up at my funeral.
The moment Dad walked in, he slapped Mom hard across the face.
Just as I was still confused, he said, “Yvonne told me everything, and I’ve already submitted all the evidence to the police. Just wait. They’re coming for you!”
I had stayed in touch with Dad over the years, but he’d moved abroad after divorcing Mom.
We hadn’t seen each other in a long time, and whenever we did talk, I never told him anything bad; I only shared the good news.
He didn’t even know I was sick.
When I was ill, it was Yvonne who took care of me tirelessly. Out of gratitude, I gave her Dad’s business card before I died, telling her that if anything happened, she could reach out

to him. I had also hoped that if my surgery failed, she could pass on the news to him.
I never imagined that in the end, she would end up helping me this way.
Dad was a businessman, decisive and efficient as always. As soon as he learned my situation, he immediately had his lawyer collect the evidence.
The sound of police sirens suddenly cut through the commotion.
Already knowing that they were here for her, Mom was mentally prepared.

But to everyone’s surprise, a police officer approached Sean and said, “Mr. Goyle, you are under suspicion of repeatedly accepting bribes and intentionally causing the death of Mr. Zachary Goyle under the guise of a medical accident. Please come with us.”
Perplexed, Mom quickly stepped in front of Sean and said, “Officer, you must be mistaken. It was I who secretly switched doctors for the surgery. Zachary died because of me. This has nothing to do with Sean.”
Sean cowered behind her and didn’t dare to utter a single word.
The officer frowned and replied, “Dr. Zieck, you’re also going to be held accountable. You abused your power and caused someone’s death, so you’ll be taken away as well.
“Mr. Goyle’s crimes are backed by solid evidence. We only arrest people based on proof.”
“Fine!” Mom began shouting at him like a madwoman. “Since you claim you have evidence, show me! Show it to me now!”
Looking resigned, the officer pulled out his phone and showed her a clip of the footage from the operating room.
In the video, Sean looked like he was up to something. His hands weren’t trembling because of fear at the sight of my skull being opened–it was solely out of anxiety.
He glanced around at the other doctors, then deliberately guided the scalpel not to the
tumor, but to a major artery far away from it.

“Sean, what are you doing?” A nearby doctor immediately shouted, snatching the scalpel away from him.
But Sean didn’t show the slightest remorse. Instead, he threatened the other doctors.
“If any of you breathes a word of this, I’ll have my mom fire you all!”
Shocked, Mom gaped at the screen, unable to believe her usually obedient son would
behave like that.
Sean immediately dropped to his knees and cried out, “Mom, it’s not what it looks like. I
didn’t mean to! It was an accident. Please save me!”
But Mom, who’d always been blindly fooled by him all these years, suddenly came to her
senses. She shoved him to the ground.
“You murderer!” she screamed before hitting him again and again.
The officers quickly pulled her away, while Sean lay disheveled and pathetic on the ground.
Realizing that he could no longer lie his way out, he grinned and said, “I’m a murderer? But weren’t you the one who taught me? Don’t you remember how many times you’ve framed Zachary just to protect me?
“By the way, weren’t you the one who gave me the chance to operate on him in the first place?
“Oh, and guess what–you’ll never believe this. Back when you were involved in that car
accident, I was the one who pushed you into the road. Zachary tried to save you, yet he ended up getting blamed for it all these years.
“And after Dad left, he was the one who did all the housework. He even bought you gifts, but you loathed him so much that he didn’t dare give them to you.”
“Stop it! I don’t want to hear it anymore!” Mom cried out, clutching her head.
Sean’s words stabbed her heart like a knife.

The police, not wanting to escalate things further, quickly restrained him and dragged him
away. As they hauled him into the car, he threw his head back and cackled.
“Do you regret it now, Dr. Zieck? You’re the one who killed the son who loved you the
most.”
Mom stood frozen in place, staring after him. Tears streamed down her face as her lips moved silently, but not a single sound came out.
