He seemed to revert to the person who once loved me, even making me wonder for a moment–did he actually still care?
In the middle of the night, I was delirious with fever.
Suddenly, the bedside table vibrated-
“Buzz–buzz-”
We both looked toward the phone.
On the screen, 12:35.
Contact name: [Sweet Baby].
Sickeningly intimate.
I stared motionless at the flashing screen.
The vibration seemed not to be on the table, but on my wolf’s nerves-
He’s not your mate anymore, Elara. He’s lied to you too many times.
I said nothing.
Rowan appeared calm, but his jawline was tense, his gaze evasive, unable to hide his discomfort.
His phone on the nightstand kept buzzing, switching from calls to video requests, then to a series of text messages–dense, unrestrained, brazen.
The air grew taut like a bowstring.
I glanced at him and asked softly: “Aren’t you going to answer it?”
He finally reached for his phone, didn’t even look at it, turned it off, and tossed it back onto the nightstand.
He gently touched my forehead. “Still a bit warm. Don’t worry. Go to sleep, I’ll watch over you.”

Chapter 10
I closed my eyes and lay back down.
But I never fell asleep.
About an hour later, my breathing was steady, as if I had fallen into deep sleep.
He quietly got up, took his phone, went to the balcony and turned it on. As the screen lit up, messages
flooded in. He quickly scrolled through them, then made a call in a low voice.
“…Are
you okay? Don’t worry, I’ll be right there.”
After hanging up, he went back to get his coat and quietly closed the door as he left.
When he was gone, I slowly opened my eyes.
I had been awake the whole time.
I didn’t know what I was still hoping for. But one thing was becoming increasingly clear:
My mate, the one who had promised to love only me, had changed his heart.
At 4:30 in the morning.
He returned.
Seeing me still “sound asleep” in bed, he breathed a sigh of relief, came over to feel my forehead–the fever was gone.
He went to the bathroom for a shower, then lay back down on the bed, gently embracing me from
behind.
I opened my eyes, silently removed his hand, and sat up.
