Chapter 6
On the day of the birthday celebration, my father hosted an engagement ceremony for Sebastian and me
Sebastian insisted on planning a grand wedding for me, so our wedding date had to be postponed by two weeks,
Dad called me to his room, concern written all over his face. “Sweetheart, though your engagement to Sebastian is official, if you don’t truly care for him, I can step in…”
“Dad, I want this. I really do.”
My mind drifted back to the day Jake abandoned me at the registry office. I called him over twenty times with no answer. When the final call connected, it was Ivy deliberately putting me on speaker during their intimate moment.
“Jake, baby, do you prefer me or Luna?” she purred.
“You, of course. You’re my precious little darling. Luna’s just my obedient dog who comes and goes when I call, Once I get my hands on the Shred fortune, I’ll make Luna your personal maid–you can torment her however you want.”
Five years of genuine devotion, and in his heart, I was nothing but a dog.
In that moment, something inside me froze completely.
I walked out of the registry office in a daze, oblivious to the truck running a red light and barreling toward me from across the street.
By the time I registered what was happening, my mind went blank, as I watched the vehicle bearing down on me.
In that critical second, someone yanked me out of harm’s way. As we tumbled to safety, he positioned himself to shield me, his back slamming against a stone bollard.
I escaped without a scratch, but he broke two ribs.
That person was Sebastian Blackwoods.
Sebastian and I were actually childhood friends. When we were young, our families were neighbors, and when my parents were busy, Sebastian
looked after me.
Later, his family moved their business overseas. Before leaving, Sebastian gave me a bracelet, asking me to wait for his return.
I waited year after year, until I was kidnapped when I turned eighteen.
The kidnappers wanted money. They blindfolded me, but after once they had the cash in hand, they had started planning to hurt me.
When I woke up in the hospital, I saw Jake with his bruised face. He grinned at me through his injuries, “I’m just glad you’re okay. Almost lost my life saving you, but it was worth it.”
At eighteen, having a boy nearly sacrifice his life for me–I fell into his sweet deception and forgot my promise to Sebastian.
Until today, when Sebastian saved me again, triggering long–buried memories with that familiar feeling.
I couldn’t believe it–the same person who once risked everything to save me turned out as cold and manipulative as Jake. Was any of it real?
I paid a considerable sum to have the past thoroughly investigated.
The truth proved I had been wrong all along.
The person who rescued me from the kidnappers and nearly died in the process–the same one who now broke two ribs saving me from the car–was always Sebastian Blackwoods.
He had nearly lost his life saving me from the kidnappers, only for Jake to swoop in and take credit.
And I not only forgot our childhood promise, but forced him to witness the person he loved walk away with another man while he lay near death.
Whenever I think about this, a dense pain fills my chest until I can barely breathe.

Leaving the room, I spotted Sebastian waiting outside the door.

A sudden angry shout shattered our perfect moment.
