Chapter 50
Sharon looked up at Wendy, who looked well–maintained and gave off a warm and approachable vibe. She seemed young, so much so that standing in to Nicholas, they didn’t look much like a mother and son.
“Shari, have you set your eyes on anything? Don’t hesitate to tell me I’ll cover it for you,” Wendy said, walking over excitedly.
Wallace quickly said, “Thanks, Mrs. Baxter, but you don’t have to do this. I can afford the things here.”
He didn’t want the Baxter family picking up the tab. He knew exactly what they were up to. He and his brothers wouldn’t let Sharon marry into the Baxter family and put up with their nonsense. They would find her someone easier to control.
“You’re too polite, Wally. I really like Shari. To
badave a daughter,” Wendy responded.
Looking at the warm Wendy, Sharon smiled
“Please don’t call me that. Wendy is just fine,” said see you. Mrs. Baxter.”
Wendy
growing more fond of Sharon.
She thought, ‘What a sweet and well–mannered girl. I want to give her everything I have. It’ll be wonderful if she ends up as my daughter–in–law. I’ve bought so many adorable dresses over the years, and finally, someone can wear them. I am so excited.’
“Alright, Wendy. You look amazing today,” Sharon said softly, making Wendy’s heart swell with happiness.
Wendy beamed with joy. She started to shop with Sharon, instructing an assistant to buy anything Sharon glanced at more than briefly.
Wallace and Nicholas followed behind them.
Wallace looked grim. Hè found everything about Nicholas annoying. He believed that Nicholas, with his complicated family situation, wasn’t good enough for Sharon.
Nicholas sensed a hint of animosity from his future brother–in–law. He cleared his throat, his cold expression shifting slightly, and said, “I heard Nolan
caused some trouble just now.”
“Yeah, but it’s already been dealt with. There’s no need for your family to get involved,” Wallace replied.
Nicholas thought, ‘I haven’t even said anything yet.‘
Wallace glanced at him. “You should convince your grandfather to call off the engagement sooner rather than later. The longer this drags on, the worse it looks for both families. You don’t seem like a family man, so you’re not suitable for Shari.”
He was right–Nicholas had never thought about being a family
man.
“And you’re set on being a gatekeeper, which makes you even less suitable for Shari. You two come from different worlds. Don’t drag her into any danger. You’re a smart guy–you should understand what I mean,” Wallace added.
Nicholas recalled something his grandfather had once told him. With one hand casually in his pocket, he said, “I won’t let her be in danger.”
“You think you can be trusted?” Wallace snapped. “If you like Shari, we might consider letting you marry him, but you’ll have to live with us.”
Wallace’s words were sharp. After all, no man was willing to marry into someone else’s family, let alone be called spineless and useless for doing so.
Nicholas stayed quiet for a moment. He would never marry into someone else’s family, but he was confident that he would win Sharon’s heart.
He might be handsome, but his words were infuriating. “Then let’s see who’s more capable,” he said.
Wallace was furious and thought, ‘Is this guy even listening? After everything I’ve said, he still refuses to call off the engagement. How shameless.
‘It’s all because Shari is too sweet, kind, and adorable. Everyone loves her. I have to stop this guy from marrying her. He doesn’t want to move in with us

after getting married, and he wants to be with Sharl. Not a chance.
Wendy took Sharon around the store, drawing a lot of attention along the way. After all, she was the matriarch of the Baxter family, the most prestigious of the four major families. Seeing Wendy being so kind to Sharon while shopping together, people couldn’t help but wonder who Sharon was
A rich lady approached them. “Mrs. Baxtel, it’s rare to see you in places like this.”
“I’m here for something today. Fortunately, I came, or I wouldn’t have had the chance to see Shari,” Wendy replied.
“Is this young lady related to the Baxter family?” the rich woman asked curiously.
At that moment, Wallace stepped forward to cut in. “She’s my sister.” Meanwhile, he bellowed inwardly, ‘She has nothing to do with the Baxter family Could the Baxter family stop being so enthusiastic? This is my sister, not one of their own.
“So this is Ms. Sharon Vance. She is so pretty. She and Mr. Baxter are a perfect match. Mrs. Baxter, congratulations,” the woman said.
Though most people weren’t familiar with Sharon, Wendy’s attitude spoke volumes. As long would dare offend Sharon.

the Baxter family acknowledged the engagement, no one
Mrs. Baxter’s eyes squinted with a smile. “I agree. The moment I saw Shari, I felt an instant connection.”
Sharon didn’t say anything, just smiling in response.
Wallace was fuming inside, but he knew it was inappropriate to interrupt Wendy, especially when she was showing affection for Sharon.
He didn’t want his little sister to have anything to do with the Baxter family and even blamed his father a bit for making such an agreement with Edward.
marry Nicholas. He and his brothers would never let Sharon
Wendy was quite popular, and many other rich ladies came over to greet her. She, ever so gracious, introduced Sharon as her future daughter–in–law.
Wallace’s face darkened even more. Before long, others came over to strike up conversations with Wallace. After all, if Sharon really married into the Baxter family, the status of all the Vance brothers would change entirely.
With Wendy and Wallace socializing, Nicholas and Sharon were alone. Nicholas handed Sharon a plate of fruit and said, “Try this.”
Sharon took a bite and then looked up at him. “What do you think of this engagement?”
Nicholas lowered his gaze. Her soft voice reminded him of his rival, the one he had fought that night in the canyon. Their voices were so similar. But he’d never heard his fiancée’s angry voice.
His slender fingers twitched slightly, and a ripple of emotion stirred in his heart, though his expression remained cold and composed.
“It’s just an arranged engagement,” he said lightly. “Don’t worry about it. Besides, with my family backing you, no one will dare to mess with you.”
The underlying message was clear: the engagement wasn’t going anywhere.
Sharon noticed how the others were flattering Wallace and realized the high status of the Baxter family here. She knew people were pragmatic.
“Alright,” she said with a faint smile..
Since Nicholas had said so, there was no need to overcomplicate things. Without the engagement, her brothers would probably find her a man willing to move in with them after getting married. She didn’t want that. She admired capable men.
And being engaged to Nicholas would mean more peace for her and bring benefits to her brothers, so it wasn’t such a bad deal.
Nicholas was momentarily stunned. “You agreed?”
“Yeah.” Sharon nodded, as if she had just agreed to something trivial.

Something stirred deep in Nicholas’s chest, and joy flickered across his cold eyes. He believed that since she’d agreed to be his fiancée, it was only a matter of time before she agreed to marry him.
“Agreed to what?” Wallace suddenly appeared, glaring at them with a dark expression.
