Chapter 59
“I’m not interested,” I replied Matly.
“Don’t be difficult, Augustin. You need to think about heirs. Your father
“I already have someone in mind,” I interrupted.
It took her a moment to understand my implication. When she did, ber face darkened with anger.
“The tribute? You can’t possibly be serious. She’s tainted Shoe She’ll never be accepted as Luna Queen.
Haughed. “I’m not a virgin either, Mother. And I’m thirty, We match perfectly.”
“This is just a phase,” she insisted. “You’ll tire of her.”
“It’s going to be a very long wait if
what you’re counting on,” I replied.
I stood, ready to leave. I’d had enough
of
this conversation.
“Where are you going?” she asked, sounding surprised.
“Home,” I stated simply.
“But why? You just got here.”
here!
“I left the bed of a woman I’m falling in love with to come here today. I missed breakfast with her–all because you said you needed me.” I shook my head, feeling a profound disappointment settle in my chest. “But since the moment I arrived, all I’ve gotten is your cold shoulder and Evanth’s insults. Everything you’ve done is just criticize me. You’ve questioned my leadership, my intelligence, my judgment. You’ve belittled my choices and tried to manipulate me into giving up what’s mine by right.”
I moved toward the door, then stopped and turned back to her, “But what hurts most, Mother, is how you’ve spoken about my lover The woman who makes my heart beat again after years of emptiness. The woman who risked her life for mine. But you’ve tried to reduce her to nothing. You don’t even know her, yet you’ve decided she’s beneath me.”
My mother’s face paled as I continued, “If we keep talking like this, we’ll cross lines that can’t be uncrossed. We’ll damage what’s left of our relationship, and neither of us wants that. So I’m leaving now, while we still have something to salvage.”
I reached for the doorknob. “When you can be happy that I’ve found happiness, then we can talk. Until then, there’s nothing more to
say.”
“Augustin, wait!” Her expression changed, the anger melting into sadness. “Don’t go,” she said softly.
“Please. I won’t say anything else about your… girlfriend. I’ve missed you. I don’t want to fight,
I hesitated.
“I want to meet her,” she said suddenly.
“Absolutely not,” I replied immediately.
“Why not? Are you afraid I’ll influence her? Pressure her?”
She was right, but I wouldn’t admit it. As strong as Juno was, I didn’t want anyone messing with her head. She’d been through enough.

Chapter 59
“I just have Evanth’s perspective, my mother continued. “Let me for my own opinion. Let me see her for myself
I knew she wouldn’t let this go, “I’ll think about it, I conceded reluctantly.
That’s not good enough. Promise me you’ll arrange it.”
With a sigh, I sat back down. “Ill consider it. That’s all I’m promising right now.”
“Does she have children?” my mother asked after a moment.
The question caught me off guard. “No. She’s never been pregnant.”
“Is that her issue or…?”
“Neither,” I clarified. “Her husband insisted on using protection. She married at eighteen, and he never wanted children with her.”
“For seven years?” my mother asked, clearly surprised.
“Yes.”
“What an idiot,” she muttered, and I found myself agreeing with her. We shared a laugh, the tension between us easing slightly.
“I can see how much you care for her,” she admitted. “I’ll try, Augustin. For your sake.”
I nodded, choosing to accept this small olive branch. My anger at her faded as I realized how much Evanth must have poisoned her against me. She is still my mother, and despite her flaws, I still love her. But I still decided not to stay overnight, as I urgently needed to return to my love’s side.
