I kissed the top of her head. “I aid I would.”
The scent of her fury intensified, whatever Evanth had told her, it had worked her up into a state. And I braced myself for the argument I knew was coming. I’d barely taken two bites of my breakfast when she began.
“How dare you! How dare you live your life like this, doing nothing, king no action while our enemies grow stronger? While you’ve been busy playing with your toys, your father’s killer roams free.” He voice trembled with barely contained fage. “Do you have any idea what it’s like? I have gone from being the Luna Queen of Clifflands to… to this. She gestured around her. “And it’s all because of that monster Fang who still walks free.”

“Where is your sense of duty? Where is your leadership? Where is the morality your father and I taught you?” She cut me off. “I raised you better than this, Augustin.”
“Why do you always take Evanth’s side?” I countered, keeping my voice level despite the frustration building inside me.
Her eyes filled with tears. “Evanth understands my pain. He understands what it’s like to feel alone because of what Fang did to us.*
“You’re not alone, Mother. You have two sons who love you.”
am alone!” she snapped. “Completely and utterly alone.”
I drew a deep breath, struggling to maintain my composure. Clearly, Evanth had been filling her head with his poisonous words again.
“Father brought this on himself,” I said, unable to hold back any longer. “He took Lunas from other Alphas without cause. Who was going to get justice for all the Lunas he stripped from their Alphas for no reason? He tore mothers from their children. He killed Alphas and left their Lunas without mates. Who sought justice for those people, Mother? Who?” I leaned forward. “Father got exactly what he deserved.”
The slap came swiftly, stinging my cheek. I remained still, absorbing the blow without reaction.
“How dare you!” she hissed. “Your own father. The great Alpha King Nathanael Levenston. What have you done since becoming. Alpha King? Have you expanded our territory? Have you increased our wealth? No, you’ve been coasting on your father’s glory while Kieran makes a mockery of us.”
I stood, ready to leave, but she grabbed my arm with surprising strength.
“You couldn’t even conquer Forestvale,” she spat. “Instead, you’re too busy playing with those whores you brought back. Taking them to clubs?” She shook her head in disgust. “I know you can fuck the tributes, but you’re not supposed to care about them. Your father fucked the tributes too, but at least he did it to advance his agenda.
I laughed bitterly. “Father was a perverted sadist, not did it to advance his agenda.”
She tried to slap me again, but this time I caught her wrist.
“Don’t,” I warned.
Her eyes narrowed. “Give up your position to your brother,” she said. You can still be an Alpha, just not the Alpha King.”
“Absolutely not,” I replied, dropping her hand. “Don’t test my patience, Mother.”

Everything alright in here? vanth’s voice came from the doorway, le strode in, dressed in an sult, grabbing an apple from the fruit bowl. What are you going to do to our mother now, brother?‘ he asked, taking a bite.
I ignored him, but he continued “You’re shaming our family name. ng sent his soldiers to rescue his woman, and you did nothing. You’re weak, Augustin.“.
Even though I don’t want to get into a war of words with my brother I’m not gonna put up with his repeated insults anymore.
