After showering and dressing in some of the new clothes Augustin had ordered for me–simple black pants and a forest green blouse–I headed downstairs for breakfast.
Everyone was present except Augustin. Bryloch and Adryx were already discussing the day’s agenda when I arrived.
“Where’s Augustin?” I asked, taking my seat.
Bryloch looked up from his tablet. “He had to visit his mother urgently after last night’s incident. He won’t be back until tomorrow.”
I frowned. “Goldenvale isn’t that far. Why stay overnight?”
That’s just how it is when he visits her,” Bryloch explained. “Always has been.”
I nodded, completely understanding that he needed to spend more time with his mother. Scarlett gave me a smile across the table, while Freya looked far more relaxed than she had the previous night.
“Juno,” Bryloch said after a moment, “I need to ask you something.”
I looked up from my coffee. “Yes?”
“What exactly is your relationship with Fang?”
This was the second time someone had asked me about Fang. Augustin had questioned me about him too.
“I told Augustin already. I met him once at a party. We danced, talked briefly, and then his beta escorted me back to house.”
Bryloch exchanged glances with Adryx. “You don’t know, do you?”
“Know what?”
“Fang sent troops to try to rescue‘ you specifically.”
My fork clattered against my plate. Scarlett’s eyes widened.
“What? That’s ridiculous,” I said. “Why would he do that?”
“That’s what we’d like to know,” Bryloch replied. “I understand Scarlett’s ex wanting Scarlett back. But Fang has no connection to you.”

I believed what Bryloch was telling me. And now I was worried about Matthew and everyone in Forestvale. Especially for Isabelle, Matthew’s new mate, who was pregnant with his child.
