Chapter 45
I met him once, at a gathering. I said. He had his Rate escort me home afterward. I haven’t seen him sines
Augustin’s brow furrowed. Did anything happen between you twa?
I shook my head Fmly. No, Nothing at all. Even not a kiss.”
The relief that washed over his face was unmistakable. In two quick strides, he closed the distance between us, pulling me into his arms and kissing me deeply. I felt his teeth graze the sensitive spot on my neck where a mate mark would go, and my pulse quickened. Was he thinking of marking me?
He pulled back, his eyes dark with desire. “Let’s go to breakfast.”
As we walked down the hallway toward the dining room, Augustin suddenly stopped. “Would you prefer to eat in our room?”
I looked up at him, a smile playing on my lips. I think I have an appetite for something else entirely.”
A grin spread across his face. He spun me around so quickly I nearly lost my balance, but his strong arms caught me, pulling me against his chest. We both burst into laughter.
“Let’s fill your stomach first,” he whispered against my ear, sending shivers down my spine. “Then we can tend to your other… appetites. I want to spend the day with you.”
He placed a quick kiss on my lips. “I get the hint, Berry.”
Back in our room, servants brought in trays laden with food. Augustin filled a plate for me, adding extra fruit that he knew I liked. We ate in comfortable silence for a while before he spoke again.
“How were the last days with your husband?”
The question surprised me, not because it was inappropriate, but because I realized it no longer hurt to think about Matthew. My heart had found a new home.
“Not good,” I admitted, setting down my fork. “He tried, I’ll give him that. But Isabelle was the daughter of an Alpha. Matthew couldn’t just ignore her, even if he wanted to. Eventually, she was brought into our home.”
“Was he forced to share her bed?” Augustin asked, irritation evident in his voice.
I stayed silent, looking down at my plate. My non–answer was answer enough.
He reached across the table and took my hand, stroking it gently before bringing it to his lips. “Fate may have brought Isabelle to his door, but he could have refused her. His weakness destroyed what you had.”
I sighed. “Yes. It did.”
“And Kieran? His voice had changed, tinged with jealousy. “Is there anything else I should know?”
I didn’t want to fight with him, “I’ve told you everything,” I said honestly. “We met at a gathering, he was polite, his Beta brought me home. That’s all.”
He nodded, gripping my hand tighter and kissing it again. His eyes studied me intently. “If he came for you, would you go with him?”
So this was what truly bothered him. “I don’t know him well enough to follow him anywhere,” I said firmly. “Unless you’re planning to kick me out, I have no reason to leave.”
The tension in his shoulders eased slightly.
“What about you?” I asked, trying to lighten the mood. “Any special someone in your past, or have you just been attending wild parties?” I gave him a teasing smile.
He laughed, picking up a cherry from the bowl and placing it between my lips. I deliberately sucked his finger as he withdrew it, enjoying the way his eyes

Naughty woman, he mumured, and I giggled, spitting the cherry pit into my empty plate.
There was someone, he admitted. Cassandra. My first lover
