The warm water parcated dosis my body, washing away the hand and grimes from the fight My males arhed pleasantly, reminding me of the thrill of bertke I stepped out of the shower and dried myself, wrapping a towel around my braty before walking back into the bes
Auguhin a hadst returned. I sat on the edge of the bed, my thoughts drifting back to the fight. The rush of adrenaline, the heightened senses, the pure anal instinct teking over. As much as I hated to admit it, the battle had awakened something primat in me that I’d been suppressing.
They never stood a chance, I thought with a hint of pride. Those attackers might have caused some damage, but against this many trained wolves? It was
suicide.
I closed my eyes, linked with my friends and checked them.
Freya? Scarlett? Everyone okay?
Better than okay, came Scarlett’s cheerful reply. That was exactly what I needed.
You should have seen Scarlett, Freya added. She took down three of them on her own.
It felt good to make those bastards pay, Scarlett said, a hint of darkness in her tone.
I smiled. The battle had given my friends a chance to unleash some of their pent–up anger on deserving targets. But something still bothered me. During the fight, I’d caught familiar scents – wolves from Forestvale. Why would my former pack members ally with others to attack Clifflands? Things were strained, yes, but this would only make matters worse.
The door opened, and Augustin walked in. Our eyes met briefly before he headed straight to the bathroom without a word. The shower started running, and I waited, my fingers tapping nervously against the bedcover.
When he emerged, a towel wrapped around his waist, water droplets still clinging to his muscled chest, I noticed the worry lines into his face. Something was bothering him.
I stood and walked toward him. “Augustin-
Before I could finish, he pulled me into his arms and claimed my mouth in a desperate, hungry kiss. His hands gripped my waist, pressing me against him as if afraid I might disappear. When we finally broke apart, both breathing heavily, I searched his face.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, running my fingers down his cheek.
He closed his eyes, leaning into my touch. “Don’t ever jump off the balcony like that again.”
“I was just-
“Please, he interrupted, cupping my face with both hands, his eyes intense with an emotion I couldn’t quite place. “Promise me you won’t put yourself in danger like that. Not in your condition.”
I swallowed. He was truly worried about me.
“I promise,” I said softly, even as I wondered what he wasn’t telling me. Something else was bothering him, something beyond my safety.
He pulled me against his chest, burying his face in my neck and inhaling deeply, as if reassuring himself I was really there. I melted into his embrace, letting his warmth envelop me. We stayed like that for a long time, his arms wrapped tightly around me, his heartbeat strong against my cheek.
That night, he held me closer than ever before, as if afraid I might slip away while he slept.
The next morning, I watched Augustin as we dressed for breakfast. The worry hadn’t left his eyes. He moved with the same fluid grace, but tension lingered in his shoulders. Whatever bothered him, he wasn’t sharing it with me.
“Juno,” he said suddenly, his back to me as he buttoned his shirt, “do you know Kieran personally?”
