Chapter 34
When my knock went unanswered, I entered anyway. I found her crying on the floor, but I didn’t need to ask why. The mark or her neck was gone.
I walked over and pulled her into my arms. The couple must have loved each other deeply. What happened was hard on both of them, but given their circumstances, this was for the best.
I sat on the floor, holding her as she sobbed against my chest. I could hear the agony in her wails. Fate had screwed up their love, and Matthew’s weakness had destroyed them.
“A letter came for you,” I said softly when her crying subsided. “I’ve read it for security reasons. Matthew wrote to me as well, asking me to take care of you.”
She took the letter with trembling hands. When she finished reading she clutched it to her chest and wept again. I let her cry, giving her the space she needed.
It was obvious that despite knowing their marriage was over, neither was ready to let go. They were too attached to each other.
After she calmed down, she had to pledge her allegiance to join my pack. It was necessary to prevent her from becoming a rogue.
I felt the connection form as she spoke the words. It meant I could now communicate with her through our mind–link.
Once she’d settled, I studied her carefully. “Did you live with your husband and his fated mate?” I asked.
She nodded, her eyes still puffy from crying.
“I understand why you came here,” I said. “That must have been a terrible situation.”
“If I didn’t leave, they would have killed him,” she explained.
I nodded, attempting to mask my emotions. “We’ll go horseback riding tomorrow,” I said, standing up. “I should get some sleep now.”
“Okay,” she replied simply.
I knew that wasn’t what she wanted to say. I moved closer until her back was against the wall. Her eyes, swollen from tears, met mine directly, trying to see through me.
Before she could speak, I pressed my lips to the spot where her mark had been and gently sucked. Her body responded instantly, a small moan escaping her lips. Fenris growled within me.
“The reason I’m leaving,” I whispered against her skin, “is because I’m afraid I won’t be able to control myself. And you’re not ready
yet.”
With that, I left her room, my body burning with desire.
pounding in my Back in my chambers, the need clawed through me like a living thing. My skin burned, my breathing ragged, dec
myself in hand veins until I thought I might go mad with it. I staggered to the bathroom, slamming the door behind me, and to with a savage grip. Cold water couldn’t drown the fire she’d ignited. Nothing could extinguish the hunger consuming me from within. My thoughts were flooded with her, the soft moan that had escaped her lips when I’d marked her throat.
Afterward, I collapsed onto my bed, sweat cooling on my skin, but finding no real relief. My mind raced with thoughts of her story with Matthew. She was clearly someone who loved with her entire soul, who gave herself completely. The raw pain in her eyes when that mark disappeared had been gut–wrenching, an intimate grief I had no right to witness. If something developed between us, would she ever love me with that same devastating intensity?
