Chapter 7
James stood frozen for a moment. Sophia’s desperate cries suddenly came through the phone,
sobbing for him to hurry.
He gave me one last glance before running out without looking back.
The wedding was now in complete disarray because of James’s dramatic entrance.
He had departed, leaving me to deal with the mess.
Everyone was buzzing about my relationship with James, trying to determine if we were actually
married.
We had no choice but to abruptly halt the ceremony.
After that day, I deleted James from WeChat, blocked his number, and mailed him the divorce papers, determined to cut all ties.
When James received the papers, he immediately called from an unknown number to confront me.
“Emma, what the hell is this about? Just because I didn’t pull you out of the car first during the accident, you want a divorce? And you’ve blocked me everywhere? How childish can you be?”
“I’ve already explained that Sophia has health issues–I had no choice but to save her first!”
I didn’t want to argue, so I hung up and blocked that number too.
To my surprise, he showed up at my house.
My mom still didn’t know about my relationship with James. She thought his wedding outburst had been some strange joke. In her eyes, her adopted brother was still perfect.
he brought James to my room and thoughtfully closed the door behind her.
We stood in silence until James suddenly slammed the divorce papers onto my desk.
He pinched the bridge of his nose, looking exhausted.
“Emma, how long are you going to keep this up? First a fake wedding, now threatening divorce?

Chapter 7
When we got married, we promised we’d never separate.”
I responded simply, “Fine. Then make Sophia leave your house. It’s either her or me.”
James wouldn’t agree. I knew he wouldn’t. That’s precisely why I had given him this ultimatum.
Since returning from abroad, Sophia had been living in his house, clinging to him constantly.
Whenever I’d asked James to send Sophia away, he would snap at me: “You’re being cruel! Sophia
has been taking care of me without complaint, yet you’re the one feeling wronged? Don’t you realize
she has no family left in this country? It’s almost the Christmas holidays–how can you expect her to
spend them alone?”
This time was no different. When faced with choosing between Sophia and me, James hesitated for a
moment.
Then he muttered, “I’m sorry.”
He picked up a pen and signed his name on the divorce papers.
Just like in my previous life, he chose Sophia without hesitation.
Our three–year relationship became a joke in an instant.
Out of guilt, James transferred a large sum of money to me.
But as the adopted son of the Sullivan family, that money was originally from my family anyway. When my mother discovered the mysterious deposit in my account, she traced it back to James.
Soon, she learned about my relationship with James. Furious, she stormed to his house and gave
him a beating. Sophia, who was lying in his bed, caught some of it too.
I thought my mother would scold me first.
After all, she had always been kind to her adopted brother. Since I was little, she’d constantly praised him–for being top of his class, for his brilliant mind.
Over time, I couldn’t help developing an idealized image of him.
But after getting this second chance, that filter disappeared completely.
I realized James was just an ordinary man with nothing special about him except his good looks.

Chapter 7
When my mother returned, her face was dark with anger. She threw out everything that belonged to
James and removed him from our family registry. From that moment on, our family had no
connection to him.
After doing all this, she called me to her study for a talk.
My mother didn’t scold me. Instead, she took my side, saying in a somber voice that I had suffered.
In that moment, I realized how foolish I’d been.
