After moving out of James’s place, she had returned to her old ways, becoming a wealthy man’s
mistress.
Unfortunately for her, this rich man was also married, and his wife was even more ruthless. She brought a group of people who beat Sophia so badly that all her front teeth were knocked out and
her face was slashed.
Without her beauty, she was quickly discarded by the wealthy man, and no one else wanted to keep
her.
Accustomed to being dependent, she couldn’t handle the hardship of working. With no options left, she went back to James, but he not only refused to take her in–he beat her severely.
I felt nothing when I heard this news. My heart remained unmoved, as I had more important matters to focus on–preparing for my wedding.
A month passed quickly, and soon we were celebrating our long–awaited ceremony.
This ceremony was even more grand than the previous attempt. As the makeup artist worked on
me, I kept looking at our new wedding photos.
In the pictures, Noah stood close to me, his body leaning toward mine–the posture of someone in
love.
In contrast, the photos James and I had taken showed a five–finger gap between us–the distance of
someone who didn’t love me.
The signs had been there all along; I just refused to believe them and ended up getting hurt.
Thankfully, fate was kind enough to give me a second chance.
On our wedding day, James came too.

After he was locked up, Sophia, accustomed to making money on her back, turned to selling herself
cheaply. Within a year, she had saved enough of this easily–earned money to visit a cosmetic surgery clinic.
Unfortunately, it was an illegal operation. The procedure failed, and Sophia died from a bacterial
infection.
Two years later, the first thing James did upon his release was to come see me.
When he saw me, he was stunned.
Compared to two years before, I looked so much better.
I didn’t look like a worn–down married woman, but rather like someone who had just reached
adulthood–rosy–cheeked, with smiling eyes.
The small scars on my hands were gone too.
During those two years of marriage, Noah never let me cook a single meal. Though we could have hired help, he preferred to cook for me himself.
Loving someone is like tending to a flower.
Noah and I had nurtured each other beautifully.
James watched me from a distance, not daring to approach.
During his two years in prison, he had dreamed of a family gathering three years earlier, where I had suddenly announced our relationship, becoming his official wife.
But this had cost him Sophia’s dependence.

He rushed to find me, only to learn my body had already been cremated.
My mother had called him a monster, and forbidden him from attending my memorial.
James felt his heart being torn apart, as if something had vanished with my death.
The dream had been so vivid that James had woken up crying.
So after his release, he came looking for me, wanting to apologize.
In the end, he couldn’t say it, because he realized:
