Chapter 37
Under Riley’s dedicated daily care, Nathaniel’s recovery progressed rapidly.
As autumn arrived, Nathaniel’s bones had mostly healed. The next step was daily rehabilitation exercises to strengthen his muscles and restore his physical functions.
The previous week, Nathaniel had finally been freed from the various medical devices attached to his body. Occasionally, he could even go outside, though still in a wheelchair pushed by Riley.
After being bedridden for months, he was quite satisfied with this progress.
However…
“Riley, shall we go see someone tomorrow? There are some things we should clear up.”
“Okay.” She knew he meant Victoria. It had been over three months since Victoria was arrested, and they did need to get to the bottom of some truths. “But we should ask the doctor first if you’re allowed to go out.”
Victoria’s sentence had already been decided. Her attempted murder charges were supported by solid evidence, and the Blackwood family had used some connections to obtain evidence of her previous attempts to harm Riley, along with her psychiatric diagnosis.
Although she was only sentenced to five years, the Blackwood family would immediately have her committed to a psychiatric hospital after her release. She would never have another chance to harm Riley or Nathaniel.
Early the next morning, Riley and Xavier picked up Nathaniel to visit Victoria in prison.
When they saw Victoria, they barely recognized her.
In just three months, nearly half of Victoria’s hair had turned white. Her body had wasted away to skin and bones, her face completely gaunt, with deeply sunken eye sockets.
Seeing Riley and Nathaniel didn’t provoke her previous agitation. She just sat quietly at the visitation window, staring at them
without emotion.
“Victoria, we’ve come because there are some things we’d like to ask you.”
Nathaniel spoke calmly, unable to comprehend how he had once been so misguided as to fall for this woman.
Victoria seemed not to hear him, continuing to stare at the equally silent Riley.
Riley stood behind Nathaniel’s wheelchair, holding onto it, wordless.
“Go ahead, ask what you want.”
Riley frowned. Victoria’s voice was so hoarse it sounded as if her throat had been slashed. What had happened to her? In just three months, she seemed to have aged decades.
“How… how many times have you been reborn?”

Nathaniel was also startled by her voice, but after a moment’s hesitation, he asked directly.
“The third… how did you know?” Victoria’s previously calm voice suddenly rose several pitches, becoming harsh and grating,
Nathaniel frowned slightly, then smiled at her. “How did we know you weren’t experiencing your first rebirth? We didn’t know for sure, so I was bluffing. Now we know.”
Riley said, “Can you tell us why you hate me so much? I originally thought it was just because you liked Nathaniel, but now it seems there’s more to it…”
“Yes, I do hate you.” Perhaps knowing her ultimate fate, Victoria no longer hid anything. “If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be in this position…”
According to Victoria’s account, when she first met Nathaniel, she didn’t know he already had a girlfriend.
She simply liked him, without using any extreme measures to pursue him.
So when she later discovered that Nathaniel already had a childhood sweetheart fiancée, and that they were very much in love, Victoria was prepared to give up.
But just as Victoria was ready to move on, Riley had a car accident.
It wasn’t because of Victoria–it was a genuine accident. Riley died in the crash, and Nathaniel fell into a deep depression for a long time.
Later, with Victoria’s companionship, Nathaniel gradually pulled himself together, and the two eventually married.
Unfortunately, their happiness was short–lived. Less than three months after their wedding, Victoria was diagnosed with leukemia. Having just obtained happiness only to lose it so suddenly, she couldn’t accept it…
