“You mean…”
Riley looked at him hesitantly, nodding. She wasn’t completely certain.
But she remembered that in her previous life, Victoria had suddenly gone mad and driven the car straight at her.
Later, while being held captive by Nathaniel, Victoria had always seemed strangely confident, as if unafraid of consequences.
Why was she never worried about the outcome? Perhaps because she already knew what would happen.
“When you’re feeling better, we’ll go see Victoria directly. You and me, we’ll go together…”
“Okay.” Nathaniel nodded with smile, and reached out to take her hand, but she uncomfortably pulled away.
Nathaniel froze, suddenly realizing that he now counted among her “enemies.”
Looking at his empty hand, he felt a sharp pain in his heart, but there was nothing he could do. This was the consequence of his own actions.
Riley sensed Nathaniel’s tension, but she truly couldn’t accept everything right away. She couldn’t forgive the Nathaniel from their previous life.
Facing his grief, she felt even more pain.
She loved Nathaniel, yet also hated him. Now she both owed him and was owed by him.
Riley closed her eyes in anguish, the piercing pain in her chest bringing tears instantly to her eyes. After blinking hard several times, she looked at Nathaniel with difficulty.
His face reflected the same pain she felt. The debt between them had long become impossible to calculate.
Looking at Nathaniel’s grief–stricken face, Riley suddenly smiled with acceptance and took his hand–still connected to various
machines.
“Let’s make peace, okay? What happened before is in the past. From now on, promise you’ll never let go of my hand again. Pinky swear?”
Seeing the extended little finger before him, Nathaniel was reminded of the little girl who used to love making pinky promises with her teacher years ago.
He couldn’t help but smile, reaching out to link his pinky with hers. “Okay, it’s a promise. I’ll never let go of Riley’s hand again.”
