Chapter 35
Nathaniel shook his head. “Not exactly.”
He gave her a bitter smile, struggling internally with whether he should tell her everything he knew.
Riley, if I tell you that I’m the same person you hated most in your previous life–the one who crushed your only hope for survival–would you still stay by my side?
Silence enveloped them until Riley finally said, “It’s okay, Nathaniel. Whatever you want to say, just say it.”
Nathaniel didn’t answer immediately. He just stared at her, lost in thought, until Riley called his name several times.
Nathaniel decided to tell her the truth. She had the right to know everything. After hearing it all, whether she chose to stay with him or leave would be entirely her decision.
Having made up his mind, Nathaniel said, “Riley, I’m sorry. I’ve been keeping a lot from you. I was afraid you’d leave me if you knew, but now I realize you’ll find out sooner or later anyway.”
“Riley… the truth is… I am the same Nathaniel from before–the one who witnessed your suffering, who experienced your
death…”
! “And I experienced even more after that…”
Frowning with emotion, his voice trembling, Nathaniel recounted everything that happened after her death in their previous life: her parents‘ heartbreak, his own breakdown, Victoria’s madness, and ultimately, his own death.
Riley couldn’t help backing away. She had thought Nathaniel was the only innocent victim, but now she realized no one was
blameless.
In the end, she hadn’t been wrong to hate them. Through all the twists and turns, it always came back to the three of them.
“Why? Why won’t this end? I’m so tired. Why can’t I escape this cycle with you two?” she cried.
“Riley, I’m so sorry…”
“So you knew from the start that Victoria was the same Victoria? You knew she would try to harm me?”
“No,” Nathaniel quickly explained. “I only realized it after her second attempt to hurt you. Victoria wasn’t mentally stable. After she ran off, she kept muttering, ‘I’ve tried so many times, why won’t she die? The first time I drove into her should have broken her legs…”
That’s when Nathaniel began to suspect Victoria might be the same person from their past life. Later, when he had her confined at his family home, he confirmed it..
But after the prolonged confinement and psychological torture, combined with memories from both lives, Victoria’s mental state had deteriorated significantly.
“She said she wanted to kill you, but kept getting confused about the details. She claimed she hit you with her car three times, then said no, it was four times, then back to three. But in my memory, she had only hit you twice…”

Riley contemplated this. “So you think she went insane.”
“Yes,” Nathaniel nodded.
But there was more. Victoria had also insisted that Nathaniel would eventually love her, claiming that in “the first time,” she was the one who stayed with Nathaniel until the end.
“Nathaniel, if we’ve both been reborn, then I think…” Riley considered a disturbing possibility.
“Victoria might not be experiencing her first rebirth.”
