Nathaniel panicked. He struggled to reach out and wipe her tears, urgently asking what was wrong
Riley finally registered her own tears and tried to smile, to tell him she was fine and not to worry.
But her voice came out as a sob, growing more distressed: “I just-”
Nathaniel couldn’t lift his hand with all the medical equipment attached, and seeing her cry harder made him frantic “Alley, please don’t cry. What’s happening? Tell me.”
Riley shook her head, her voice catching between hiccups: “It’s nothing, I just… suddenly felt sad…”
After she calmed down a bit, Nathaniel asked gently, “Riley, can you tell me what suddenly upset you?”
“I was thinking about how you’re like this because of Victoria… and I don’t want her to get away with IL”
After much hesitation, Riley still couldn’t bring herself to tell him the real reason for her tears. After all, he wasn’t the Nathaniel from her previous life.

“Don’t worry, Riley. You don’t need to do anything–Xavier won’t let her get away with this either,” Nathaniel said, squeezing her hand reassuringly.
He understood Riley’s feelings. From their previous life to this one, Riley’s relationship with Victoria went far beyond simple romantic rivalry.
