Chapter 9
Mark, the HR director and my former college senior, didn’t wait for me to speak before complaining, “Well, well, Mia! Wherever you go, Alexander follows! He was doing such a great job at the branch. If he’d completed his three–year term, he’d be up for promotion. It’s
a shame he’s giving that up.”
I was stunned. “Wasn’t the branch assignment his idea in the first place?”
Mark scoffed. “You applied for a transfer to the Berkeley branch, and Alexander found out. When he heard your ex–boyfriend was in Berkeley, he thought you were trying to win him. back, so he requested the assignment himself.”
“Alexander was thriving at headquarters. Why else would anyone send him there?”
I stood speechless.
“Just so you know, Alexander is quite the catch. All the young women in the company have their eyes on him. Don’t be emotionally unavailable like before–you might miss out on the
right person!”
Without responding, I walked out in a daze and headed straight to Alexander’s office.
Alexander was in the middle of a meeting but dismissed his staff when he saw me. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
I stared at him, stunned. “If you stayed at the branch for three years, you’d get promoted when you returned. Why did you suddenly come back?”
Alexander noticed the tears welling in my eyes and stood up, walking toward me.
“Did Mark say something to you?”
I didn’t answer, but tears began to fall.
He wiped them away, looking concerned. “Don’t cry! I just missed home, that’s all. This is where I belong!”
Still silent, I wrapped my arms around his waist and buried my face against his chest.

Alexander’s entire body tensed before he hesitantly embraced me. “Mia, does this mean… you’re accepting me?”
I bit my lip before speaking. “My past is so messy. You didn’t know before, but now you do. Do you still want me?”
Alexander cupped my face, making me look into his eyes–sincere and pure.
“I know everything now, but I don’t see anything wrong with you, and I won’t let you think that way either. You just met bad people. That’s not your fault.”
“If you’re still struggling with this, I’ll help you through it. No matter how long it takes, I’ll wait for you.”
Tears of emotion streamed down my face. Alexander gently wiped each one away before placing a soft kiss on my forehead.
Since that painful night three years ago, I had convinced myself I would never love again or truly accept any man.
But now, for Alexander’s sincerity and my own happiness, I wanted to try once more.
As it turned out, Alexander was an amazing boyfriend.
For a long time, painful memories made it difficult for me to be intimate with him.
But Alexander was always patient, comforting me and waiting for me.
Gradually, I lowered my defenses, healed from my wounds, and even reached the point where I could only fall asleep in his arms.
Three years later, in the summer, Alexander and I finally stood at the altar.
Moments before the ceremony, someone pushed past security into the bridal suite.
I looked up to see Ryan’s face.
Wrinkles had formed between his brows, making him look older than his thirty–something
years.

Without a word, he grabbed my hand. “Mia, don’t get married! I got out of prison early. I’ve
already lost you once; I can’t lose you again! Come with me, back to Berkeley. We can have
that simple life we always dreamed about, just the two of us. Remember?”
I vaguely recalled dreaming of such a life with him in my twenties. But hadn’t he destroyed
those dreams himself?
Looking at the desperate man before me, I firmly pulled my hand away. “Ryan, it’s all in the past. Move on with your life!”
As Ryan tried to persist, Alexander stepped between us. “Mr. Wells, your timing is perfect!
From today forward, Mia and I are legally married. If you’re here to wish us well, please
take a seat and watch the ceremony. If you’re here with false hopes, then please leave the
way you came.”
Ryan looked at my calm expression and finally gave up, slowly walking to a guest seat.
Throughout the ceremony, I could feel his intense gaze fixed on me.
Alexander squeezed my hand reassuringly. “Mia, don’t worry. I’ll always protect you.”
I nodded, smiling with genuine relief.
“You may now kiss the bride!” the officiant announced.
Cheers erupted as Alexander pulled me into a deep kiss.
In the crowd, that familiar figure finally turned and fled.
Goodbye, Ryan. Goodbye to my past.
