Chapter 8
She sat across from me in handcuffs, her hair cut short, her spirit broken–nothing like the confident woman from three years ago.
Her eyes were red as she stared at me. “I used to hate you so much, Mia. You were Ryan’s first love. You had four beautiful years with him and the same impressive education. The truth is, you two were the perfect match, though Ryan never admitted it.”
“When you first messaged me with the truth, deep down I knew you weren’t lying. But I couldn’t accept it. Ryan was the most amazing guy I’d ever met.”
“Regardless of his past, he had chosen me, so I refused to let go. I pretended to believe his
lies.”
“But I was jealous of your honesty, jealous that you had his love. So I hired those men to
destroy you.”
“I never imagined you wouldn’t just break–that you’d rise higher and eventually destroy everything I had.”
She suddenly laughed, looking up at the ceiling. “I hate you, but I hate myself more. You
were smart enough to walk away from a toxic man, while I let myself sink deeper into the
mud.”
“At the end of the day, I brought this on myself. You know what? During our years together, I often heard him call your name in his sleep.”
Jessica rambled on, but I just listened silently.
As women, I had once tried to help her, but she chose to blind herself for the sake of a relationship, and ultimately paid the price.
Leaving the visitation room, I stepped outside into the warm sunshine of spring,
The weight that had been pressing on my soul for years was finally gone. I felt what can only be described as closure.

I could finally give that battered, fleeing soul from three years ago the resolution she deserved.
Mia, from today forward, keep moving ahead. Do what truly makes you happy.
“Mia.”
A familiar voice called from a distance.
I turned to see Alexander standing at the exit, holding a bouquet of sunflowers.
I smiled and walked toward him.
Alexander handed me the flowers, his own smile spreading across his face.
“I’ve known you for so long, but I’ve never seen you smile so genuinely.”
I breathed in the scent of the sunflowers. “From now on, life will be as bright as these
flowers.”

Alexander was quiet for a moment before asking, “What about that birthday gift I asked for before?”
My memory drifted back, scenes slowly becoming clear.
A year ago, after six months as an intern at the company.
My hard work had caught Alexander’s attention, and he had promoted me to be his assistant despite my junior status.
On his birthday, the usually busy Alexander had surprisingly taken me to see a field of roses, where he confessed his feelings.
“Mia, I’ve spent the past thirty years focused on studies and work. Today, I want to ask for one birthday gift for myself. Would you be my girlfriend?”
Looking at the handsome Alexander, I felt a wave of unworthiness. Tears rolled down my
cheeks.
“No, I don’t deserve you.‘
