Julia’s POV
Darren returned his focus back to his work. He split the task force into groups. He sent one group to continue checking for missing pregnant women, they might have missed something earlier, then he sent another to search for the place where the torturing and mutilation had taken place, maybe they might find the missing body parts. Then, he chose a team that would go with him to the pack’s clinic to check for records of pregnant women.
Darren pinched the bridge of his nose in exhaustion. His phone rang, and he scowled in
annoyance.
He hated being distracted from work by anyone, so I never dared to do it. However, when he saw the caller ID, he smiled softly.
“Hey, Tammy. How are you?” He asked softly.
“Oh Darren, I miss you so much, and…and I can’t sleep.” She murmured softly with a shaky voice.
Darren’s eyebrows furrowed in concern.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be back home soon.” He assured her with a gentle voice.
Home. A sharp ache pierced my chest. Darren, my mate, considered Tamara his home.
When he disconnected the call, he glanced at the clock. It was just 9pm.
“Alright people, we’ll continue this tomorrow. Get some rest, so that we’ll attack this with fresher minds.” He announced to everyone.
The members of the task force that were present glanced at each other in surprise. Whenever there was an issue in the pack, they knew how late he normally stays to keep working on it.
Sorrow washed over me. Darren was always so focused on his role as Alpha that he could disappear for days without a single message to me and I never dared to interrupt him. Now, just because she told him she missed him, he dropped everything to be with her.
It was painfully obvious; I was never the one he cared for.
I followed Darren, hovering all the way till we reached a familiar building. It was his parents‘ property, and it hadn’t been occupied since his father died and his mother fell ill and moved in with us at the alpha quarters.
At least, that was what I thought. I never knew that SHE had been living there. Tamara Jones, my mate’s old flame, the woman he called his ‘long–lost love‘.
As werewolves, mates were supposed to be everything. Yet somehow, she still held a piece of his heart that I could never reach. He had saved her from the Bloodhounds four months ago, and since then he had been distant from me, always spending time with her. According to him, she was going through some trauma and she had no one. So he was just trying to be there for her till she got better.
I watched bitterly as he strolled to the door with a spring in his step.
“Tammy?” He called as he entered the house.
Tamara was lounging on the couch. When she heard Darren’s voice, she shot to her feet and threw herself into his arms in a tight embrace.

He smiled warmly, and his body visibly relaxed as he held her in his arms.
“How was your day?” He murmured softly, still holding her.
She gave a light shrug. “Boring, I missed you so much.”
His smile widened. “I missed you too. I’m sorry I couldn’t come earlier. This murder case is more complicated than we ever expected.”
Tamara’s eyes tightened slightly, as she pulled back and sat back on the couch.
“Oh? Have you found anything?” she asked with a soft concerned voice.
Darren shook his head with a heavy sigh as he sat, beside her.
“The only thing we know is that the victim was pregnant. We don’t know who she is, we don’t have any clue. It’s just so complicated.”
Tamara covered her mouth in horror.
“Oh no,” she gasped, “A pregnant woman… that’s horrible.”
She sounded so concerned and worried, but her eyes gleamed with something darker, something
that looked like satisfaction.
I scoffed in anger at her hypocrisy as I hovered around them. It was so obvious, but Darren was too blind to see it. I watched as she pretended to care, but the truth was that she just wanted to
know more about the case.
It was painful to watch as Darren told her everything about the murder investigation, things that he was supposed to keep private. Darren never told me anything, even though I was his Luna. It was so unfair.
He was so soft and gentle with her, giving her all she asked for. Like now, he was so eager to tel her everything about the murder investigation, like an excited puppy. When he finished telling her everything about the murder, her eyes were shining with fear and horror.
“Oh my goodness!” She exclaimed. “And you don’t have any clue, yet?” She asked.
Darren shook his head with a grave expression on his face. “Not yet, but because of the moonfire we found in her uterus, we think it might be connected to…the Bloodhounds.” He stated, with a worried frown on his face as he watched her with concern.
Tamara gasped in dread, but Darren quickly moved closer to comfort her.
“Look, you have nothing to worry about. This place is safe, and no one knows you’re here. You’ll be safe, I promise.” He swore.
“Just stay inside till we find those responsible, and if you need anything at all, just call me.” He instructed gently, rubbing his hands up and down her arms.
Tamara nodded, and threw herself into Darren’s arms again as she sobbed.
‘Oh my Darren, thank you for all you do for me. I don’t know what I’ll ever do without you.” She cried. Then she pulled away slightly, and looked into his eyes with a concerned expression.
‘But, what of Luna Julia, your mate? You come here every day, and you spend the night here for months now. Doesn’t she mind? Isn’t she pregnant?”
