First thing the next morning, I went to the courthouse and collected our divorce decree and
certificate.
The entire time, Zach clung to Amber, showering her with affection. The moment they got the divorce certificate, he loudly announced they were going to register their marriage.
I didn’t waste a single word on him–just drove straight back to the hospital where patients were waiting for me.
After completing two surgeries, I had barely stepped out of the OR when Zach cornered me.
“Ellie! What the hell is your problem?! Why didn’t you sign that damn waiver?! I got my ass chewed out by the chief and lost my entire bonus! Happy now?!”
“Zach,” I looked at his pathetic face, feeling nothing but emptiness, “that waiver isn’t appropriate for me to sign.”
“Not appropriate?! You’re doing this on purpose! You’re trying to ruin me! Surgery has risks! If you’re such a devoted daughter, why didn’t YOU operate on your mom?!”
“Surgery risks?” I let out a cold laugh. “Are we talking about normal surgical risks, or about the lead surgeon and his nurse disappearing for a full forty minutes mid–procedure? Zach, should I pull the surveillance footage and post it online so everyone can see what these ‘surgical risks‘ really look like?”
“You–you ARE doing this deliberately!” He jumped up. “Just because your mother died on my operating table, you’re out for revenge! You want to destroy me!”
“Listen up, Ellie! You’re going to reimburse me for this month’s bonus! And that waiver! You will go sign it! Right! Now!/The chief is waiting for it!”
“First of all, Zach, we’re already divorced–you have no right to put your hands on me. Second, only immediate family of the deceased can sign a waiver, and since we’re divorced now, I can’t sign it.“.

“I think you’re the one who’s lost it.” I stared into his stupid, angry eyes and pushed the waiver toward him. “We’re divorced, now your mother has absolutely nothing to do with me. This waiver should be signed by the deceased’s son.”
I paused, watching his confused face, and delivered each word with a touch of vicious
sátisfaction:
“Zach, have you still not figured out the name of the patient who died on your table yesterday?”
“Her name was LINDA COLLINS.”
