Chapter 1
In the operating room, my husband, the lead surgeon, disappeared for forty minutes with his nurse mistress. The patient died as a result.
Afterward, he demanded I sign a medical liability waiver to make the incident go away.
That’s when I realized… It turned out that he thought it was my mother who was one on the operating table.
I silently pushed the waiver back across to him.
“It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to sign this,”
“You should sign it instead as the deceased’s son.”
“Sign this.”
Zach slammed the document onto my desk, his face showing zero remorse–just impatience.
I glanced down at the paper. “Medical Liability Waiver” was printed across the top.
While I was still processing this, Amber, standing beside Zach, spoke up in her fake sugary
voice.
“I’m so sorry for your loss, Ellie. Dr. Collins did everything he could, but your mom didn’t
make it…”
As she spoke, she bowed her head in pretend sadness while tightening her grip on Zach’s
arm.
I froze, instinctively looking up at Zach. “What happened? Wasn’t it just a routine thyroid
removal?”
Zach let out a cold laugh/Amber immediately jumped in, her tone dripping with condescending sympathy:

Chapter 1
“Ellie, you’re a doctor too. How can you say something so unprofessional? Complications
happen in surgery. Your mother was elderly, her health was fragile… You can’t blame Zach for this. He’s probably taking this harder than you are.”
He’s taking it harder?
I frowned, staring at Zach.
-Isn’t that how it should be?
My gaze seemed to offend him. Zach roughly pushed the waiver toward me again.
“Cut the crap! Ellie, just sign it and take it to administration yourself. Meet me at the courthouse at 8 AM tomorrow to pick up our divorce decree!”
He paused, then pulled Amber closer to him as if to rub it in my face. “Tomorrow, Amber and I are getting married. To avoid any bad luck, I won’t be attending your mother’s funeral.”
With that, Zach left without even looking at me, his arm around a smug–looking Amber.
My mother’s funeral?
My eyes returned to the “Medical Liability Waiver.”
The patient’s name was partially smudged due to what looked like a printer malfunction. I could barely make out“.
Co**ins.”
“Due to family negligence in post–operative care, the patient developed fatal complications. The hospital and surgeon Dr. Zach Collins bear no responsibility…”
I read each word carefully, feeling increasingly bewildered.
Zach only had one surgery scheduled today.
The patient was his own mother–Linda Collins.
