Chapter 17
Theo sensed something unusual. He steadied Riley and his normally gentle expression became serious.
“Riley, you seem particularly concerned about your legs. It was the same after the car accident. Can you tell me why?”
Theo felt there had to be something deeper beneath all this–some connection between these people that he didn’t understand.
Riley stared at him blankly. Had she really been that obvious? Had he seen through her so easily?
But could she tell him? And if she did, would he believe her?
After all, being reborn sounded ridiculous, like something made up.
Seeing Riley’s hesitation, Theo didn’t press her. He waited quietly.
He knew that if she wanted to tell him, she would eventually speak up.
In the end, Riley shook her head and said: “I’ll tell you another time. Can you take me back to my dorm?”
Hearing this, the doctor who had been silent spoke up: “His injuries are much worse than yours, and you’re asking him to take you back?”
Pretending not to see the young man’s subtle warning glance, the doctor went back to his work.
Hearing the doctor’s words, Riley suddenly remembered.
That’s right–when he saved her, he had been hit by the light. She had only been cut by some flying glass.
Riley tried to look at his leg, but Theo stopped her.
“It’s fine, really. Besides, a young woman shouldn’t be lifting a man’s pant leg!”
Riley blushed at his words, giving him an annoyed glare, but she couldn’t help feeling concerned.
This boy, who barely knew her and had only met her twice, had already saved her twice.
He’d even been injured while saving her. Tears welled in her eyes again as she said softly: “I’m sorry…”
Theo stroked her hair, his voice still cheerful and bright: “It’s nothing, really. Besides, it doesn’t even hurt that much…”
Seeing that Riley was still looking down without speaking, he stood up with a smile, making a gesture to help her off the bed.
“Come on, if you really feel sorry, you can treat me to a meal.”
Riley saw him pat his stomach, his eyes crinkling with a smile.
“I’m starving–I haven’t eaten lunch today. Let’s go get something to eat, and then I’ll take you back to your dorm.”

Riley nodded shyly. Despite being the less injured one, she was the one being comforted and helped.
Maybe later, when she had the chance, she would tell him everything
After all, he had saved her twice. He deserved to know the reason why he’d been hurt.
Having made up her mind, Riley suddenly felt much lighter.
She looked up at Theo and said: “Let’s go eat.”
The two supported each other as they left the infirmary, only to run into Nathaniel, who had come to pick up Riley.
“Riley, I’m here to take you back to your dorm.”
As he spoke, he glanced at Theo’s hand supporting Riley, his eyes cold.
Feeling the uncomfortable gaze, Theo raised an eyebrow but held Riley’s hand even more firmly.
To his surprise, Riley looked at Nathaniel with a cold expression and moved away from his outstretched hand.
“No need. I can get back on my
own.”
Nathaniel withdrew his empty hand, a subtle anger appearing on his face as his voice deepened: “Riley, be reasonable. You’re hurt. Let me take you back.”
Riley was equally blunt: “I said, no need. Nathaniel, where were you when it mattered?”
“I…” Nathaniel gave a bitter smile. So that was it–she had misunderstood.
Was she blaming him for being late?
