Ethan quickly masked his surprise with anger as he glared at Scarlett.
He stormed forward, snatching the wig from Summer’s hand.
He tore at it violently before tossing it in the trash like garbage.
“You’ve got some nerve, Scarlett! Trying to blackmail me with this crap?”
“You think I’m scared? Let me tell you something–even if you said you were dying right now, I’d make damn sure we were divorced before you took your last breath!”
Tears streamed down Scarlett’s face as she struggled to speak.
“Do you really hate me that much, Ethan?”
His eyes remained fixed on her.
A soft hand slipped into his palm from beside him.
He lowered his gaze, oddly reluctant to look at Scarlett’s tear–streaked face.
“Three years, Scarlett, Haven’t you figured it out yet?”
Yes, three years.
Three years she’d held onto this ice–cold relationship.
He never noticed how clean she kept their home.
Never cared about the carefully matched clothes she laid out for him each morning.
For three years of marriage, he acted like a guest in their home.
Only she lived in the beautiful illusion she’d created.

She became calm again, like before.
“Tomorrow at nine in the morning. I’ll wait for you at the courthouse.”
She bent down to retrieve her wig from the trash.
Then she turned and left their home.
Ethan watched her thin silhouette, feeling an unexpected tightness in his chest.
Before he could process it, his feet started following her.
“Ethan!”
Summer grabbed him from behind.
Her eyes showed disbelief. “Where are you going?”
Ethan snapped back to reality and frowned.
“I need to check on her. Scarlett freaked out over one lost strand of hair
shaving it all off? Something’s off”

stomach and doubled over.
Ethan stopped in his tracks.
“Don’t worry about me, Ethan. Go after her.” Summer whimpered.
Ethan looked down at her pained expression.
He bent down and picked her up.
“I’m taking you to the hospital first.”
Scarlett collapsed on the sidewalk not far from their apartment.
A good Samaritan took her to the hospital. When she woke up, Tania was wiping sweat from her forehead with a worried look.

“Does it still hurt, Scarlett?”
Scarlett’s pain made even breathing difficult.
“Tania… can you buy me a ticket?”
“You’re barely hanging on and you want to travel?”
Scarlett slowly raised her hand to wipe away Tania’s tears.
“New York’s always so damp. I never had time before. Now that I finally have some free
time, I want to see more places.”
Tania sobbed, looking at Scarlett’s increasingly jaundiced face. She couldn’t refuse.
“I’ll come with you.”
Scarlett shook her head.
She’d troubled Tania for so long already. She knew Tania worried there would be no one to take care of her body when she died.
“You’ve finally got stability in your life. I’ve bothered you enough. I owe you too much already.”
Tears poured down Tania’s face. She threw herself onto Scarlett, sobbing.
“Shut up! You don’t owe me anything! You need to stay alive! Why should those two assholes get away with this? Summer just walked out on him, and Ethan crashed his car chasing after her.”
“If you hadn’t stayed by his side pretending to be Summer to keep him live, the Brooks family would’ve given up on him! Why the hell should you bear all the pain? Who the fuck even cares what you’re going through?”
