Scarlett stared at him in shock.
Before she could process his words, the doorbell rang.
Ethan’s face lit up with a smile as he went to answer it.
“Ethan! Am I late? My students wouldn’t stop asking questions today!”
Summer confidently pulled out a pair of women’s slippers from the shoe cabinet.
Scarlett recognized them–she’d bought them recently but hadn’t gotten to wear them before moving out.
Seeing how at home Summer was in their apartment made Scarlett tremble.
“Perfect timing. Go wash your hands and let’s eat!”
Ethan’s warm tone pierced Scarlett’s ears.
Summer giggled coyly before approaching the table.
“Sorry I’m late, Ms. Reid!”
Scarlett didn’t respond. Summer didn’t wait for one anyway, walking straight to her seat.
“Ethan, you’re so sweet! You set out my place setting already.”
“I know how you are about cleanliness. I washed everything several times for your inspection!”
“So what reward do you want?”
Ethan pinched her cheek gently. “Just eat well. You’ve been working too hard at school and you got sick. You’ve lost weight.”
Scarlett watched them silently, their conversation flowing effortlessly.

Her dead heart somehow found a way to ache again.
She couldn’t help interrupting them.
“So this is how you handle my last request, Ethan?”
Her whole body felt like it was covered in thorns.
When Ethan looked up at her, he suddenly noticed how thin she’d become.
He responded with a mix of guilt and defiance.
“I made plenty of food. You couldn’t eat it all anyway.”
“Summer’s been sick. I’ve been at the hospital looking after her. You pushed me to do this last thing, but I couldn’t just leave her alone.”
Summer sat across from Scarlett.
The smugness in her eyes mocked Scarlett’s foolishness.
Suddenly Scarlett felt exhausted.
All her strength drained away. The final breath she’d been holding felt punched out of her.
She felt terrible–not just her heart, but every bone in her body radiated intense pain.
Her head drooped, looking withered.
With effort, she forced herself to stand up.
Her eyes remained fixed on the floor.
“Ethan, I shouldn’t have expected anything from you.”
Her words were so soft, like a needle falling silently to the ground.
Seeing her about to leave, Ethan shifted slightly.
But Summer moved faster.

She reached out to stop Scarlett, accidentally catching her sleeve on Scarlett’s wig.
In an instant, Summer yanked the wig off.
Ethan gasped sharply.
“Scarlett! Where’s your hair?!”
With her back to him, Scarlett’s hands shook uncontrollably.
Her mind went blank. Summer’s action had ripped away her last shred of dignity.
Just as she was about to explain everything to Ethan out of desperation, Summer picked up the fallen wig
With a serious face and accusatory tone, she spoke.
“Ms. Reid, I can’t believe you’d shave your head just to keep Ethan from leaving you!”
“After these five requests, and now you’re playing the ‘shaved, suffering angel‘ card? Real original”
