Chapter 5
Ethan clenched his fists and glared at Scarlett.
She knew exactly what he wanted to say.
Taking a labored breath, she slumped to the floor with no energy left.
Her ear was still ringing from his slap as she rubbed it gently.
She began refolding the clothes scattered across the floor.
“Isn’t this what you’ve been waiting for? Divorce me so you can marry Summer?”
“Two more requests left. You wouldn’t waste all that effort, would you? Honestly, you’ve
half–assed the first two requests. Maybe you don’t want this divorce after all?”
She looked up into his eyes.
His dark gaze filled with contempt.
“Scarlett, you should know your place. Too bad you don’t.”
“Fine, I’ll do this third request. But remember, the Reid family won’t protect you anymore.
Touch Summer again and I’ll make you fucking wish you were dead.”
Scarlett laughed bitterly to herself.
Anyone could talk tough.
Back when they fought the most, Ethan was never a match for her.
Besides, she’d soon give him exactly what he wanted without him lifting a finger.
Ethan called Summer to comfort her, arranging for her early return to New York.
Watching him protect Summer so carefully made Scarlett’s heart ache.
So Ethan could love someone after all.

Just not her.
When Ethan returned, Scarlett still hadn’t finished packing her clothes.
He couldn’t stand watching anymore and yanked her up, bending down to pack them himself.
“God, you’re useless. Can’t even pack this little bit of stuff. Anyone would think you’re dying with how weak you are.”
Scarlett suddenly felt like teasing him.
“You got it. I am dying. How about that? Will you regret treating me like this when I’m
gone?”
Ethan froze for a second. When he looked up, his face was filled with mockery.
“Regret? Dream on. If you died I’d throw a party for three days straight and invite all of
New York to celebrate.”
Scarlett laughed until tears came, clutching her abdomen.
“Damn, Ethan. You’re brutal. We’ve slept together, you know.”
Scarlett didn’t stay long.
She could feel her body reaching its limit.
Back in New York, she spent another week in bed.
After each radiation treatment, her hair fell out visibly faster.
When Ethan called to push for the last two requests, she hid in the bathroom and cried all
afternoon.
Afterward, she went to the mall fully covered up and bought a wig.
“You cut your hair?”
Scarlett ignored his question and got straight into his car.

“Let’s go.”
Ethan frowned. He instinctively reached to touch her wig, but she quickly dodged.
“We’re in a hurry. Are you coming or what?”
Ethan got in the car. “Just a friendly reminder–less than seven days until the Cooling–off period ends. You better think fast about those last two requests.”
Scarlett didn’t answer. She kept staring out the window.
She’d been too busy before–busy fighting with Ethan, busy trying to get his attention–and
had missed so much of New York’s beauty.
She’d thought if she could stand at his level, they’d share the same view together.
But the truth was, when you’re with someone who doesn’t love you, they don’t see you even
when you’re right beside them.
Yet for someone he loved, he would bend his proud back.
Scarlett’s fourth request was for Ethan to take her to an amusement park.
“How childish!”
Ethan gave her a look of disdain.
