Chapter 2
Scarlett wandered through the streets clutching the diagnosis from her doctor.
“So I only have about thirty days left?”
“I’m very sorry, Ms. Reid.”
This wasn’t the first time Scarlett had felt her world shatter. With the Reid family now struggling, all the burden had fallen on her shoulders.
She felt helpless back then too.
She’d called Ethan. She thought even arguing with him might make her feel better.
But Ethan hung up on every call until he got so annoyed he turned off his phone completely.
The next time she saw him, he was naked in bed with a model–their honeymoon bed.
Ethan never cared about her desperation. All he saw was a face he despised.
He deliberately French–kissed the model in front of her, their lips parting with a lingering thread of saliva that stung Scarlett’s eyes.
“So? Ready for divorce now?”
Scarlett maintained her composure and fled the room.
Everyone in New York knew they couldn’t stand each other since childhood and fought whenever they met.
Everyone assumed Scarlett hated Ethan as much as he hated her.
She touched the wedding ring on her finger. Ethan had reluctantly given it to her after they were married, throwing the box at her face.
At first, Scarlett kept her feelings well hidden.
Until Ethan forced her to fulfill her “wifely duties.” When she was coming, he noticed the

ring on her finger.
Ethan suddenly laughing. “Scarlett, don’t tell me you actually love me and that’s why you
won’t divorce me?”
“If so, get over it. I’ll never like you. I can’t stand you!”
There was always a reason for his hatred. The Brooks and Reid families had arranged their business alliance marriage long ago, forcing Ethan’s first love Summer Lane to leave the
country.
That night, Scarlett lay awake until dawn.
Her mother had died young, leaving no one to teach her how to keep the man she loved. As
a child, she could only get Ethan’s attention through arguments. But what now?
Scarlett blinked her dry eyes.
Her phone kept vibrating, disrupting her thoughts.
She checked it and saw everyone in the group chat thanking Ethan – he’d sent money to all
of them through Venmo.
“Well, well, what’s got you so giddy, Mr. Brooks?”
Ethan didn’t reply. He just posted a picture of their signed divorce papers.
That one image was like a bomb, drawing out everyone who’d been silently watching.
“No way! Scarlett agreed to divorce?”
“This is fucking fantastic! Ethan, you finally dumped that ball and chain!”
“This is worth celebrating! You hated seeing Scarlett’s face every day sleep with as many girls as you want!”
now you’re free to
“Kinda weird, though. She put up with all those models, so why divorce now? Maybe she’s just playing him and won’t even show up.”
The chat went silent after that comment.

Then Scarlett’s phone rang.
“You better not play me. You’ll really sign the papers after the Cooling–off period?”
Scarlett’s pale face forced a weak smile.
She spoke softly into the phone.
“Yeah, I’m just playing you.”
“So, Ethan, what are you gonna do about it?”
