Chapter 14
He’d never forget the look in Scarlett’s eyes that day.
He knew he’d gone too far but was too proud to apologize.
The next morning Ethan woke up to find Scarlett had cut his hair…
When Ethan arrived at the address on the note, he expected Scarlett to open the door.
He’d already prepared his snarky comments.
After all this drama, what was she trying to do?
Was this just to avoid the divorce?
Was she hoping he’d change his mind?
Just as he thought this, the door opened.
“Scarl-”
He froze at the sight of the stranger.
“Who are you?”
Tania stared at Ethan with emotionless eyes.
Like still water, completely calm.
“Who are you looking for?”
He peered inside, seeing only her there. “Sorry, wrong place,” he frowned.
As he turned to leave, Tania suddenly called out.
“Are you looking for Scarlett Reid?”
Ethan stopped dead in his tracks.

“You know her?”
Tania didn’t answer.
Ethan carefully studied the woman. She lived in an average–priced apartment with ordinary furnishings.
How would someone so ordinary know Scarlett?
He looked away and spoke politely.
“Sorry about that. Scarlett is my wife. I need to talk to her. Do you know where she is?”
“Wife?” Tania caught that word immediately.
Somehow Ethan felt this woman’s gaze was far from friendly.
Figures–anyone friends with Scarlett had to be just as weird.
Tania let out a soft laugh.
“If Scarlett’s your wife, why not just call her?”
That question again.
Ethan felt offended.
This woman clearly had no idea how tense his relationship with Scarlett was.
Otherwise she wouldn’t ask such a question.
Given how he and Scarlett usually fought, going weeks without contact was nothing
unusual.
He lost his patience.
“If you see her, tell her I’m waiting at home.”
With that, he turned to leave.

Seeing him walk away, Tania suddenly flung the door wide open.
The door slammed against the wall, startling Ethan.
“Mr. Brooks, don’t bother waiting. Scarlett isn’t in town.”
Ethan turned back in surprise.
“Where did she go?”
Tania stared directly at him.
Then she went inside and returned with a letter.
“No idea. She didn’t tell me when she left. This is a letter she left behind. I haven’t opened it. Maybe it says where she went.”
“A letter?” Ethan took it, confused.
Who even writes letters anymore?
Ethan looked down at the envelope. Before he could apologize, Tania slammed the door shut.
Ethan scoffed.
“Scarlett, what the hell friends do you have?”
He walked out of the complex with the letter.
He didn’t notice the pair of eyes watching him leave from a sixth–floor balcony.
Back in his car, Ethan tore open Scarlett’s letter.
He expected important information.
Like about that red string.
Or why she stood him up and disappeared.

Chapter 14
He opened the letter with many questions.
But after reading it several times, he laughed in frustration.
It wasn’t really a letter–more like a tourist brochure.
The whole thing just went on about how beautiful San Francisco was.
She wrote about the crystal–clear waters and fresh air that could “heal the damage he’d done to her.”
Feeling played again, he angrily crumpled the letter and tossed it onto the passenger seat.
He stepped on the gas and drove home.
But before getting out, he weirdly picked up the letter again.
Almost possessed, he called his assistant to book a flight to San Francisco.
When he came to his senses, he told himself:
This was just about divorce. Scarlett had tricked him with those five things, dragging this
out for a month.
Making her sign the divorce papers in person was what she deserved!
On the way to San Francisco, Ethan surprisingly got a good sleep on the plane.
Before leaving, he packed Scarlett’s letter along with divorce papers he’d printed overnight.
He was determined to watch Scarlett sign those papers himself!
