Summer walked in to find Ethan in a rage.
Her heart skipped a beat.
“Ethan? What’s wrong?”
She asked carefully, studying his face.
“Scarlett didn’t show up.”
Summer’s smile instantly vanished.
“Well, that explains it.”
Ethan looked up sharply. “Explains what?”
Summer bit her lip, playing reluctant.
“I really hate getting in the middle of your drama, but Scarlett is being totally ridiculous this
time.”
Ethan’s temple throbbed.
“You know what? My friend just told me that Scarlett got someone to help her fake an emergency. They’re saying she’s super sick and needs surgery ASAP. Someone’s been calling you non–stop to sign consent forms.”
“Did you get those calls?”
Ethan didn’t answer. His eyes fell to his smashed phone on the floor.
Summer followed his gaze.
“Oh my god, it’s true!”
She put on her saddest face.

“Honestly, why is she so obsessed with lying to you? She really doesn’t want this divorce, huh? Do you think… she’s in love with you?”
“What about you? After three years together, do you also-”
Ethan cut her off by pulling her into his arms and kissing her hard.
When they broke apart, Summer collapsed weakly against his chest.
“I love you so much, Ethan. If you feel the same way, I am willing to be your mistress.”
Ethan’s eyes widened.
He looked at her tenderly.
“Baby, you’ll never be my mistress. You’re going to be Mrs. Brooks, and everyone will know
it!”
After Summer left, Ethan couldn’t sit still.
He called his assistant over on his work phone.
“Starting today, any project the Reid family wants, we take it. I don’t care what it costs.”
“Call everyone who’s ever worked with them. Make them choose sides. If the Reids want to play dirty, I’m done being nice.”
The assistant stood there shocked and couldn’t help interrupting.
“But sir, the Reid family filed for bankruptcy this morning. Mr. Reid was cremated just last
week-”
“What?!”
Ethan froze,
How could he not know?

“You specifically ordered everyone not to mention the Reid family or get involved in their
business.”
Plus, his father–in–law dying was major news.
Who would have guessed Ethan had absolutely no idea?
After the assistant left, Ethan sat on the couch for a long time trying to process everything.
He hated Scarlett and her family so much that despite being married for three years, he
never let her near his company. He banned the Reid family from using their connection to
him for any business deals.
Scarlett had once watched him give these orders to his assistant.
She’d just laughed mockingly.
“Don’t be so cocky, Ethan. Someday you might be on your knees begging me for
connections!”
Thinking about this now, Ethan felt strangely conflicted.
Sure, he didn’t like Scarlett or her family.
But her family had faced such a massive crisis, and she hadn’t said a word to him.
Was she trying to make him look like the villain? The heartless husband?
If so, Scarlett had seriously miscalculated.
His face darkened as he grabbed his phone to call her.
