Eric paused for a moment, then calmly shut the folder in his hands. His usual chill demeanor returned as he said, easygoing as ever, “Just wanted to let you know that the baby’s stable. As long as Ms. May gets proper rest and keeps things low–key emotionally, the baby’ll be fine.”
Gabby didn’t look convinced. Her brows drew together as she asked, “Seriously? You’re not lying to me, right?”
Eric gave her a quick, reassuring smile, “Ma’am, I’m a professional–I would never joke about something like this. But if you’re still worried, you can go in for another check–up in a couple of days.”
Gabby studied him for a few seconds. Then slowly, the tension in her face eased. She gave a faint nod and mumbled, “Okay–I understand. Thank you, Dr. Lawson.”
Eric smiled and gave her a few more reminders about daily care before heading toward the door.
Just before leaving, he glanced my way–with a look that was somewhere between confusion and uncertainty.
I gently patted Gabby’s shoulder and spoke softly, “You’re still hooked up to IV, so don’t move around too much. I’ll ask Nina to come sit with you. I just need a quick word with the doctor. I’ll be right back,
okay?”
Gabby looked up and nodded, “Okay.”
I kissed her forehead gently, then stepped out of the room.
Sure enough, Eric was out in the hallway, leaning against the wall.
He’d been waiting.
I walked over. Eric flicked a look toward Gabby’s room, then lowered his voice and asked, “So, what changed? We were all set to–you know. End it. So why the sudden turnaround-?”
I let out a slow breath, that tight ache already settling in my chest, “Eric, you saw her. Gabby’s totally in love with this baby. She’s hanging by a thread emotionally. If we take the baby away now, it’ll break her. I don’t want to see her suffer any more than she already has.”
Eric’s expression grew more serious, “Are you sure about this? It’s still early. If you wait any longer, it’s gonna be much harder to do anything.”
I hesitated, Gabby’s pale face and teary eyes flashed through my mind. And my chest clenched.
I met Eric’s eyes. My voice was firm, “Yeah. I’ve decided.”
He sighed and shook his head, giving a crooked smile, “Alright–if that’s your call, I’ll respect it. But just remember–every day that baby’s still around, your future with Ms. May gets messier.”
I gave a faint smile and didn’t say anything.
Eric patted me on the shoulder and sighed, “Alright, I’m heading back.”
I gave a nod and watched him turn to leave. But after just a few steps, Eric suddenly turned back, grinning, “Ry, honestly–this is the first time I’ve seen you care about a woman this much. Never thought I’d live to see the day.”

I let out a faint smirk.
Yeah. Never thought I’d be that guy either. So caught up. So scared to lose someone.

Eric left down the hall, and I turned back to check on Gabby when my phone suddenly rang
As soon as I picked up, I heard Finn’s panicked voice came through, loud and clear, “Sir! Something big just happened! Vincent just landed in Bellton! His plane’s touching down at Bellton Airport any minute!”
I froze.
What the hell was he doing here?
Had he found out something? Did he know–that I was hiding Gabby?
This sudden news hit me like a storm. My gut twisted with dread.
My plan the bond I’d been building with Gabby–was it all about to be destroyed by this uninvited
guest?
“Sir, You still hear me?” Finn sounded frantic, “What should we do?”
I clenched my jaw, forcing myself to think, “Get to the airport. Take a team with you. I’ll be there right away.”
“Got it.”
I added sharply, “And Finn–don’t let him leave the airport. Do whatever it takes. Stop him!”
