Chapter 2
A doctor finally arrived to treat me.
“You’ll be okay,” the nurse reassured me, though her voice trembled.
“I still can’t reach your husband.”
“Do you have another family member who can sign for your surgery?”
I forced my eyes open.
Blood–crusted tears made my vision hazy.
My voice was weak but resolute.
“I’ll sign for myself.”
No matter how much it hurt, I wanted to live.
“This poor woman.”
“Fighting for her life, and her husband is nowhere to be found.”
“Meanwhile, look at Mrs. Johnson next door.”
“Just a scratch, and her husband is turning the whole hospital upside down for her.”
“Life is so damn unfair…”
I stayed awake through the anesthesia, refusing to let myself drift off.
But memories dragged me back.
Michael’s voice echoed in my mind:
“Sarah, who said you could come into my office while I’m working?”
“Sarah, can you be more thoughtful?”

“That tie doesn’t match my suit.”
“Sarah, my parents are elderly.”
“And you still insist on arguing? Ever heard of respect?”
“Sarah, it was just a birthday. Stop being such a petty wife.”
Each memory shattered like broken glass.
The anesthesia drained me, but I clenched my fists tight.
Once, I had held onto this marriage just as tightly.
But after seven years, there was nothing left but fragments.
“Ma’am! You’re awake!”
A young nurse’s excited voice pulled me back.
She checked my forehead and sighed in relief.
“No fever! Surgery was a success.”
“The metal rod piercing your side has been removed, and your wounds are stitched up.”
“You’re so strong–you stayed awake through the whole thing! Weren’t you in pain?”
“Your phone’s charged now.”
“I kept trying your husband, but his phone’s still off.”
“Do you want me to call someone else?”
Before I could answer, voices drifted through the curtain.
“Let’s move you to a private suite. This shared room smells awful!”
“Michael, it’s really not that bad… I don’t want to trouble you…”
“Babe, you’re too considerate.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll handle everything.”
“I’ll get you the best doctors.”
“No way I’m letting a scar ruin your beautiful legs.”
“How else will we pick out dresses later?”
His voice was full of warmth and adoration.
Each word was a knife.
Shut up, Michael.
Shut the hell up.
Your sweet nothings make me sick.
Once, you held my wedding dress with such care.
Once, you cradled my face, smiling with love.
Once, you swore, “You’re the only woman I will ever love.”
Now, every memory you gave me…
You’re slashing them apart.
Leaving me bleeding all over again.
