Chapter 99 The Game Is Over
Claire’s wailing was ear–splitting. Between sobs, she kept bringing up her and Vincent’s baby, making sure everyone heard her desperation.
“Vince, what do we do? I love our baby–I can’t lose our baby!”
The masked man waved his dagger back and forth between Claire and me, his voice cold as he began the countdown.
“28.”
“27.”
Vincent’s eyes darted anxiously between Claire and me, his face filled
with desperation.
I inhaled deeply, forcing myself to meet his eyes. My voice was eerily steady, detached.
“Vincent, it’s over. I’ll go. I’ll join Toby. That’s good. Toby is always afraid of the cold–he’ll need me with him.”
Just saying Toby’s name felt like tearing my heart apart. But it didn’t matter anymore. Soon, we’d be together again.
I wasn’t waiting for Vincent’s response. I didn’t care what choice he
made.
Because deep down, I already knew who he would choose.

Panic flickered across his face as he reached toward me, “No, Gabby!
I won’t let you die!”
But just then, Claire’s sobs grew louder, “Ah–Vince–Something’s
wrong–My stomach hurts so much-”
Instantly, his focus snapped to her. His voice cracked with fear, “Claire! Are you okay? The baby–is the baby okay?”
His entire world narrowed to her and the child she carried.
The masked man smirked, completely unfazed. He lifted a hand,
resuming the countdown.
“6.”
“5.”
“4.”
Vincent looked shattered, his indecision suffocating him. He kept
looking at me, then Claire, his face drained of color.
I closed my eyes.
Toby, Mommy’s coming.
Then, for the first time, a sliver of doubt crept in .
My voice was barely a whisper, so soft it almost dissolved into the
wind.

“Vincent–we have another child-“The words disappeared, swallowed
by the sound of the crashing waves.
The countdown continued, distant and meaningless.
I didn’t know if he heard me.
And then, just as the masked man announced the last number,
Vincent’s voice rang out from the shore–clear, resolute.
“Claire!”
“I choose Claire!”
A small, sad smile formed on my lips.
Just as I expected.
When I opened my eyes, Vincent’s face was awash with guilt, regret
pooling in his gaze.
I should have let go of him a long time ago, shouldn’t I?
I had known how this would end, so why did it still hurt?
For the second time, Vincent had abandoned me.
The man I had loved for so many years had never chosen me–not
even once.
How pathetic.

The masked man let out an amused chuckle and clapped his hands.
“Very well. The game is over.”
With deliberate slowness, he raised his dagger and began slicing
through the rope holding me up, savoring the moment.
Claire gasped. “Oh my God-”
Vincent stood frozen, his mind struggling to catch up to reality. Then,
everything snapped into focus for him.
“Gabrielle!”
But it was too late. The rope snapped completely, and the moment my
body lost its support, I plunged into the ocean.
Water crashed around me, swallowing me whole.
Every sound, every voice–gone.
The ocean pressed against me, cold and merciless, pulling me deeper
into its depths.
I couldn’t swim. Vincent knew that better than anyone.
Maybe that’s why I let it take me.
Toby had drowned here too. Maybe this was where I belonged.
I didn’t struggle.
The icy water filled my lungs, stealing the last traces of warmth from

The world around me grew darker and colder, and at last, I let go of
everything.
The pain.
The love.
The regrets.
Somewhere, above the surface, Vincent was screaming my name. His
voice was raw with guilt, fear, and desperation.
His voice carried guilt, fear, and desperation.
But to me, it meant nothing.
Fake.
Meaningless.
I let my body drift downward, deeper into the abyss.
And then-
A voice.
“Gabby-”
My mind stirred.
That voice–was it him?

Ryan?
Had he come for me?
Or was my dying mind playing tricks on me?
