Chapter 123 The Engagement Between the Hudson and Miller Families
Ryan
I shot a glance at Gabby, a tight feeling coiling in my chest.
She had to be getting suspicious–maybe even starting to question
everything.
I had a plan. Step by step, I was guiding her into this new life, helping
her leave her past behind. But then Summer showed up and threw
everything into chaos.
She wouldn’t stop bringing up Vincent, circling dangerously close to
exposing Gabby’s connection to him.
I was always in control, always composed. But today, for the first time
in a long while, I felt a flicker of panic.
Summer’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears, her expression raw with
hurt. She stared at me, her voice trembling as she pleaded, “Ry, you’ve
been getting colder towards me–Is it because of her?”
She pointed at Gabby, her gaze burning with jealousy.
I frowned, my voice flat, “Summer, I was never warm towards you to
begin with.”
The words hit her hard–I could see it in the way her face fell, but she
refused to back down, “But you weren’t like this before.”

I thought back to the old ties between the Miller and Hudson families.
The previous generation had been close, and years ago, they arranged
a marriage between us.
Back then, I was too young to care about something as trivial as an
engagement. It barely even registered in my mind.
But I did remember one thing clearly–my fiancée from the Miller
family wasn’t Summer Miller. It was Isla. Isla Miller. A sweet, lovable
little girl.
She had been my childhood friend. She used to follow me around
everywhere, calling me “Ryo” in that cheerful, innocent voice.
But then–she disappeared.
The Miller family searched relentlessly, sparing no expense to find her.
But she was gone. No clues, no leads–just vanished.
They never gave up hope. But as the years passed, she never came
back.
Two years later, the Miller adopted Summer. They treated her like their
own, showering her with love, and spoiled her with everything she
could ever want.
And since engagement between our families still stood. Summer was
placed in Isla’s role–as my fiancée.

My mother had adored Summer, when she was alive, she was always
trying to push us together. But I never wanted her. Never once
considered going through with that engagement. Out of respect for
my mother, I kept things polite, but that was it.
I never saw her in that way. Not even once.
Three years after my mother passed, I finally went to the Miller family
and ended it.
They weren’t happy, but for the sake of the business, they had no c
hoice but to accept it.
But Summer never let go.
She clung to me, always finding excuses to stay in my life. No matter how many times I pushed her away, she kept coming back.
But now, Gabby was here.
I fought too hard to keep her by my side. There was no way I would let
Summer ruin everything.
Besides, Gabby had lost her memories. I didn’t want her dragged back into the pain of her past. And I sure as hell didn’t want her connected
to Vincent.
But my biggest problem right now? Summer. She was getting too
close to the truth.
If she spilled–if Vincent found out-

A fresh wave of unease washed over me. I couldn’t let that happen. I
needed to get Gabby out of here.
I reached for her wrist, gripping it firmly as I murmured, “Gabby, let’s
go.”
She hesitated for a moment, like she wanted to say something. But in
the end, she stayed silent and followed me without question.
“Ry!” Summer’s voice rang out, sharp with desperation, “Wait! I’m not
finished!”
I clenched my jaw and quickened my pace, pulling Gabby along
without looking back.
