Chapter 9 Was It Really Uncle Ryan Who Saved Me?
Last time I mentioned divorce, it might’ve been an impulsive outburst. But this time, I meant it.
If Vincent hadn’t been with Claire right before the wedding, if Claire hadn’t said those things when Josephine called.
Maybe Josephine wouldn’t have been so shocked, maybe she wouldn’t have left us so soon!
What suffocated me the most was that I couldn’t even fulfill her last wish!
My beloved grandmother never got to see my wedding.
I pulled back my stinging hand, coldly eyeing the handprint on Vincent’s face, “Vincent, let’s get divorced,” I repeated.

It took him a moment to process what had just happened. He stared at me, disbelief written on his face clearly, “Gabrielle, you actually slapped me? And now you want a divorce?”
I let out a bitter laugh.
Yeah, I actually slapped him.
I had loved him so much–enough to give him everything.
To think that I, the one who once revolved my whole life around him, would slap him?
“You cheated during our marriage. You’re getting off easy with just a slap,” I looked down at him coldly. “That slap was for Grandma.”
“Cheating? Where’s your proof?” Vincent glared at me, “Can you stop being so paranoid? There’s nothing between Claire and me. What’s wrong with caring about your sister?”
“Ha! How noble you sound,” I laughed bitterly, pointing at his chest, “Even if you haven’t physically cheated, emotional cheating counts, doesn’t it? Ask your heart who you really love.”
Vincent paused, thought for a moment, and then glared at me, “Grandma just passed away and you’re talking divorce? I bet you’ve fallen for someone else!”
“What do you mean?”
“Don’t play dumb!” he said, his eyes bloodshot with frustration, “That bullet was heading straight for you, but you only got a minor injury. Don’t you understand why?”
“Why?” I asked instinctively.
I really didn’t understand.
I thought that bullet would hit somewhere vital!
‘Unless–could it have been because of that person who suddenly lunged at me? Did he save me?‘
“Gabrielle, Uncle Ryan saved your life at that moment!” Vincent said bitterly, “Everyone knows what kind of person Uncle Ryan is! If there was nothing between you two, why would he risk his life for you? He’s still in the hospital, by the way. Who knows if he’s even woken up!”
I froze, shocked.

‘It was really Ryan who saved me? And he was seriously injured in the process?
“Is-“I took a moment and asked, “is Uncle Ryan alright?” I asked, my voice shaking.
“See? You obviously have feelings for him! How did I not notice before how much you care about my uncle?” Vincent laughed mockingly. “How dare you accuse others when you’re not innocent yourself?
“There’s nothing between Ryan and me. Don’t be so dirty–minded! Not everyone’s like you!” I shot him and Claire a disgusted look.
I didn’t understand why Ryan saved me either, but there was truly nothing between us.
“Vincent, who are you to make accusations? When the shots were fired, who did you rush to protect?” choked up, asking through tears.
The image of him instinctively shielding my sister still made my heart ache.
Vincent fell silent, his expression darkening.
“Enough, stop fighting!” Mom frowned, “Your grandmother just passed away. How can you fight like this? Let her rest in peace.”
Everyone went quiet. Soon after, Josephine was moved to the morgue. She was really gone, and I broke down crying.
After making temporary arrangements for Josephine’s body, I asked around for Uncle Ryan’s room. Hesitating for a long while, I decided to visit him.
Standing outside his door, I was sweating with nervousness.
‘How was he? What should I say when I see him? Why did he save me?‘
Questions flooded my mind as I bit my lip and knocked on the door.
