Chapter 6 Vincent, Let’s Get Divorced
I took a deep breath and choked out, “Today’s our sixth wedding anniversary,”
“Sorry.” Vincent tensed, turned around and gave me a quick hug, his eyes softening just a little. “I’ve been so busy lately, I forgot.”
“I’ll make it up to you another day. Whatever gift you want, I’ll get it for you, okay?”
I had to admit, his face was handsome, and his voice was warm. In the past, I might’ve accepted this as an apology and let it go.
But now, I could only laugh bitterly.
“Vincent, you forgot our wedding anniversary, but you remembered to pick up Claire from the airport.” My eyes stung as I said, “Our son is missing, and you’re rushing off to take care of Claire.”
My voice shook as I continued.
“Do you even remember that I’m your wife?” I clenched my fists, nails digging into my palms. “I know you and Claire were in love before. If you can’t forget her, we could–get divorced.”
The word “divorced” made me tremble, but it also felt like a weight lifted from my chest.
“Divorce?” Vincent snorted like I’d cracked the biggest joke, “Gabrielle, have you forgotten how hard you schemed to marry me in the first place? Now you’re willing to just walk away?”
He raised an eyebrow, looking me up and down, “Stop joking. This isn’t the time for tantrums. Toby’s my son. Of course, I’m worried about him! I’ll find him, don’t worry. But right now, your sister isn’t doing
well, and I have to check on her.”
With that, he turned and left, not even sparing me another glance.
I didn’t try to stop him. I knew in my heart he couldn’t be kept.
He never clarified if he still loved Claire, but his actions spoke louder than any words.
Vincent thought I’d never have the guts to divorce him? He even said I schemed to marry him!
But that thing happened back then? It wasn’t my plan. He misunderstood.
Whatever. He wouldn’t believe me anyway.
Hot tears rolled down my face as I covered my mouth to muffle my sobs.
Vincent, how did we end up like this?
That night, I tossed and turned in bed.
Vincent never came home, and I just lay there in the empty room, staring at the ceiling.
Maybe it was time to seriously consider divorce.
The next day was gloomy.
I got up early to check on the investigation’s progress at the police station.
Finding Toby was the most urgent matter–there was no way I could rest until he was found.

Vincent wasn’t home, and I didn’t care where he went.
He probably spent the night with Claire anyway.

At the police station, I spoke with the investigating officer for what felt like hours.
So far, there were no leads. I’d posted a reward notice and asked the police to help spread the word.
I’d do anything to find Toby!
After leaving the station, it started drizzling. I watched the rain fall, and a wave of familiar loneliness washed over me.
Even though I had a husband, a child, and my grandmother. I felt like I was all alone in the world.
“Toby, Mommy will find you. No matter what.” I prayed silently.
Just then, I noticed a black umbrella appear above my head.
Surprised, I turned around and met a pair of deep eyes. It was Ryan.
His eyes were as striking as emeralds. I blinked, caught off guard, before greeting him, “Uncle Ryan, what brings you here?”
“Just passing by.” He tilted the umbrella toward me, “Checking in on Toby’s case?”
I nodded.
“I’ve got people looking into it. We should have news soon,” he said, his steady voice oddly comforting.
“Thank you, really thank you.” My nose stung as I fought back tears of gratitude.
“No need for thanks.” Ryan held the umbrella with one hand and pulled out his car keys with the other, “Let me drive you home before you catch a cold.”
In the car, I couldn’t help but think how perfect Uncle Ryan seemed in every way. I wondered what kind of woman would catch his eye.
As Ryan drove, I was so lost in thoughts about Toby that I missed several phone calls. Uncle Ryan had to point it out before I even noticed.
I picked up my phone to answer.
Vincent’s voice was urgent, “Come to the hospital right now! Grandma’s in critical condition!”
It felt like lightning had struck beside my ear. My phone dropped onto the seat.
‘Grandma. My beloved grandma…‘
“Please, hurry to St. Jude’s Hospital!” I practically sobbed to Ryan.
Without asking questions, Ryan floored the gas pedal, all while trying to calm me down.
When we arrived, Grandma was just being wheeled out of emergency.
The doctor looked at us gravely and told us that while they’d managed to save her for now, her body was at its limit. Staying in the hospital wouldn’t help anymore.
Vincent, Claire, and my mother Jean were all there.

Josephine didn’t speak to them. She just motioned for me to come closer. Through tears, Heaned in to hear her barely faint voice, “Gabby–I want to go home-”
“The wedding–I want to see–your wedding-”
“Yes, Grandma, whatever you want! Whatever you want!” I held her frail hand, tears streaming down my face.
